on the internet things connect via different ports. Your browser goes through port 80, your mail goes through 110/25/587 etc

What they do is prioritize port 80/110/25/587 traffic above any other traffic (shaping it) so you have the fastest possible experience when looking for porn and stuff (I know you do)

With unshaped, they don't prioritize anything, first come first serve, so if your torrents slows down your web browsing, tough ****.

Basically it depends on the ISP!

Shaped traffic: the ISP will give priority on certain type traffic like for example your VOIP (Skype) will have a higher priority then your P2P and so on. So it all depends on the ISP, they change the policy through the day and so on.

Unshaped: no priority what so ever, everything shares the bandwidth allocated.

Overall unshaped is normally a better solution.

Unshaped is indeed normally the better solution however it is extremely dependant on the ISP these days on just how much it will affect you.

Shaping exists to keep a networks capacity in check so that a good quality of service can be had, you notice when a network runs low on capacity the people who shaping apply to will first see their peer to peer service suffer (torrent and news) followed by gaming then (I think voip), if a network has enough capacity then shaping has hardly any affect at all. A good example of this would be mweb, at one stage newsgroups were extremely slow but browsing was fine, they got a capacity upgrade and the speed increased for everything.

People would go unshaped for gaming however since gaming uses so little traffic and its become such a big part these days with online playing a huge role you see low latency whereas in the past you would see high.

I know mweb home vs anything unshaped I've used I have never noticed enough difference to care about unshaped.

thanks a lot! I understand now :)

Im on 4mb uncapped with Mweb an i cant complain about my latency on WoW..(180 avg)...so gaming is very good!

Next question though..why the huge price difference?

Best guess a combination of two factors.

1) Since unshaped now makes less difference as it did in the past why not ride the marketing ?
2) Say a person shaped got 50% usage on peer to peer but unshaped got 100% usage, you have more of their network available to you. It's a crude example but enough to give an idea.
