understanding graphics cards

no you idiot, the new ATI/AMD graphics cards are due to be release TOMORROW, so he need not wait ages to upgrade, and in a months time the 5770/5750 will be released. Only a fool wouldn't wait a month or two.
So by waiting for the next generation (which are due for NOW and A MONTHS TIME) you get your best bang for the buck.

I'm just not going to help you folks anymore, screw this noise.

I hope you don't help out anymore... with nasty name calling like that I would rather not read your posts thank you very much.

Nomally (note the "normally") Juggy is spot on with the not waiting as due to the frequency of new GPU releases and price changes people would be waiting for ever. In this specific circumstance i say it may just be worthwhile the wait for those ATI cards as they are to be released fairly soon, but i wouldn't hold my breath for a price cut until nvidia release there GT 300 series cards or if the new ATI cards don't match up to expectations performance wise.

More posted while i was typing this: If you are waiting till after christmas for the purchase then you are not going to get much help now as there will likely be so many price changes and new additions by then that anything we recommend would be useless at that point (especially in light of the expected new GPU series). I would just keep an eye on the tomshardware GPU articles/tables/benchmarks and then decide based on those if i were you.

 hey guys i'll soon be in the market for a new gpu( upgrading my 9600gt) and i often struggle to understand gpu's. my question is: what are the most important bits to a gpu?

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=603&card2=605

if you look here you'll see why i get confused. its obvious that a gtx 295 would be better than a gtx 285 but theres many things that the 285 is better at? e.g. 295 core clock = 576mhz 285 core clock = 648mhz. i just would like to know what parts count the most in a gpu.

thanks

Just read reviews of the card you're interested in, thats the easiest though not the fastest way.

But after reading a few reviews you will start to see a pattern, then everything kinda follows.

GPUreview is great at comparing cards of the same manufacturer ie 3850 vs 4890, 9400GT vs 9800GT, and also the same DX generation (ie 7900GT cant really be compared to the 9800GT, since the newer cards use unified shaders instead of vertical shaders and pipelines and such)

Though many nvidia cards were rebranded from last generation but yeah...read some reviews :P
