Hi guys
I am currently reading a book called Telecommunications Essentials by Lillian Goleniewski. I understand most of the concepts but am just have difficulty understanding it in a Telkom context.
Could someone please explain to me:
1). How voice data vs adsl data travel from your home on the local loop. Does both run as an analog signal on the local loop just at different frequencies.
2). Is it still twisted pair cable to the distribution box? What happens at the Distribution box and how does the above mentioned data get from there to the local exchange? Where does the DSLAM sit.what does it do and how does it look?
3). What is inside the local exchange? Is there Routers for the packet data from ADSL and seperate circuit switches for the voice data? Basically is there seperate devices for every function within the local exchange.
4). Lastly, how do ISP's connect to Telkom's network? And how does it work if you have e.g. WebAfrica as an ISP for ADSL. How does Telkom route the initial connection and after the setup what happens?
I understand that this is quite alot and i will greatly appreciate it if someone can shed some light on this for me because it all still remains fuzzy even after reading books. If you could please also give pictures of each of these devices, specifically Telkoms devices.
Thanks
Grant
