Hi,

For a while now I have had problem with my internet connection. I stay connected but for a minute or two - at random times - all traffic just stops. It is like a switch has been put off. Then things just start again - as if the switch was switched on again. All the time I have been connected to the net.

Anyway after some dealings with my ISP support, they told me to run a tracert, which I did (see below) and hops 2 and 3 time out. The ISP told me this is a fault at the local exchange with the dslam.

One Telkom support guy told me the fault is with SAIX as my line has tested perfectly, and that my ISP must now report this to SAIX. Well, my ISP logged another fault with Telkom, and now Telkom has told me they have changed my dslam and all is OK, but hop 2 and 3 are still timing out.

I am caught in the middle because each party just blames someone else and I still have some problems with my connection. :(

Can you skilled folk help me out? Thanks so much

Doesn't mean anything...I get the same thing. The ones that time out just pass traffic along...they don't respond themselves.

The ping/latency does look a bit high though.

Rather post some of the line stats from you router. Like SNR ratio etc. The place you get that info from depends on the router...but its somewhere in the router config page.

Also, you can get a prepaid 1gb adsl voucher from picknpay...if that works fine then the ISP is the problem if not then the line/telkom is.

By the way...I'm thinking Telkom is the probably culprit here.

Thanks for your thoughts. :)

OK SNR ratio etc - way above my level of understanding and tech skills!!

I like the 1 gig prepaid idea - did not even know it was available. Will give that a go.

Any other inupt?

Yes....um....neither does the PnP staff. :D Its under the prepaid menu where the airtime is and they usually require some convincing + guidance to find it. Axxess 1gig voucher. Costs R68. Some routers are "network locked" though...specifically the nashua & some of the mweb ones. So the vouchers don't work on those.

The SNR is on the router page. You open an internet browser/firefox/opera and type the address into the address bar. The address depends on the router model. 192.168.1.1 and 10.0.0.2 (or was it 10.0.0.1?) are popular.

Then it asks you for the username & password. This is the *router* username&password...not your internet account. i.e. it won't have an @ sign in it. It will usually be printed on the documentations somewhere. Somewhere there it will show the line stats. If you post the router model then someone will probably be able to give you less generic instructions.

btw how are you connecting to the router? network/wireless/usb?

None of these work, and my skills levels are not up to scratch. Next time they work on my computer I will ask them to have a look.

Thru a USB port.

Thanks for your input - it is appreciated as no one else seems like they have anything to add
