We are all aware of the recent unethical behavior my Momentum but they are by far not the only company who does this. My recent dealing with Outsurance highlighted this again. Let me start out by saying that they are not doing anything illegal but what they do is really unethical and proves that their #1 priority is to decline any claim.
I have a valid policy with them and I have always taken great care to ensure my stuff is not lost or stolen, mostly to my own detriment i.e. I would never go on vacation and leave my home unattended, store things elsewhere when I go away etc. But this being SA you cannot get away from affirmative shoppers and I recently fell victim to this. Seems like they jumped a spiked wall and stole my power tools from my garage in broad daylight. I'm P*ssed since claiming is NEVER a win and then I found the process painful and unethical. Instead of confirming details they now request that you state it as when you took out the policy in the first place. So they wont ask that you confirm that you still have a fence, they will ask if you have a fence. Not a problem you say, just tell the truth? Well consider these irrelevant and problematic questions - Do you have a dog? Well I cannot remember if I had a dog, or which one I had when I took out the policy so what do I say? If I say no because the dog died 3 years ago it will be different to the policy. What time (not date) were you at the police charge office? Really? What is the relevance if you have a case number?
BTW it is not about answering questions, it's about the principle of it - they are clearly trying to find loopholes.
Bottom line - I would stay clear of them if I were you and if you do have any dealings with them then remember to get your most recent policy document so you can read back what is on there to them.
