For the past hour I keep getting this notification. I tried restarting my phone, taking out battery but still persists.
Is this a common android problem on the S3? It's the first time it's happening with Whatsapp.
How do I solve this without losing my messages etc?
Thanks in advance people

Backup your chats on your phone.
1. Go to WhatsApp > [Menu Button] > Settings > Chat settings > Backup conversations
2. Install WhatsApp on your phone.
3. Click Yes when prompted to restore your message history.

Try going to the whatapp website and download the whatsapp.apk there and try install it.

I cannot open Whatsapp so I can't backup

Find the whatsapp folder, either in internal phone memory (or on the sd card, if you have one), this will contain the last backup whatsapp made (it automatically backs up once a day). Make a copy of this folder and everything in it. Uninstall Whatsapp. If the original folder isn't there anymore, put it back from the copy you made, Re-install whatsapp, it should find the folder during setup and recover your backups
