Unifi Additional WiFi networks

Cool, didn't know that. I don't have a need for it but may be useful down the line.

The reason i know is because at my old job some retard set the 5 SSID's on the AP to one channel, and it caused kak.

Security reasons. I don't like the idea of something like a Sonoff having access to everything else on my network.
Sure, if it's flashed with Tasmota it's probably more safe, but there are still some devices which aren't.

I was doing some research for a paper last year, and within 30 minutes of playing around I had gotten into someone's camera and saw that from there I could access a console and see their whole network. (Everything was screen recorded and I notified them afterwards)

I'm probably being overly paranoid, but yeah - that's the reasoning.
 
Number of devices connecting wouldn't change, just a case of adding another SSID and moving devices across.
Guess I should just try and see what happens.

I may need another AP though, I have a 200mb line and I'm sitting right next to the AP and my speedtest is about 50mbps - even though I have only 10 devices on the network now (2 x laptop, 2 x phones, iot devices).
Not sure if there's an easy way to see the throughput of every device at the same time to see how much wifi bandwidth they are utilising.
Are you connecting on AC? I know when I was using N that I had much lower speedtest results.

Thank you for this video. This one, with one or two others, allowed me to do exactly what I want.
New IoT WiFi network on it's own VLAN - devices can speak to each other and the internet, but can only speak to my NUC server (which is on my main LAN) on the ports I allow.

Took all of 30 to learn and apply. I suspect I'll have a couple of challenges, like seeing the Chromecast (which will be moved to the IoT vlan) from my phone.

Next steps would be to see if I can assign one or two ports on my switch to this vlan for the hardwired IoT devices like my tv and chromecast ultra.

Unifi makes it easy to add a VLAN tag to a port as well - easier than say Mikrotik i would hazard - but the experimentation is part of the fun

Let's put some Chinese made firmware on normal network. Asking for all your network info to be sent to the Chinese :)
 
@SAguy you should have no problem at all running multiple SSID’s on the Unifis.

It’s an enterprise grade product, not some consumer level kak.

It also broadcasts all of them on the same channel as I recall so there isn’t any more overhead.

Unifi is aware of all of the networks and so won’t fight them either. Unlike rogue AP’s which it would try and avoid.

However...I see no reason for segregating it all just for added complexity. But I don’t own any tinfoil so there is that.

If you really want to segregate it then another SSID won’t do the job and you need a VLAN and different network in play.

That doesn’t sound right but Speedtest also isn’t a fair variable as your internet is the limiter not your WiFi.

5ghz you kind of want an AP in each room where you use it or at the very least the next room over otherwise 2.4 will probably give you a better bandwidth result in most cases.

It’s why I don’t recommend using the High Performance Mode (Beta) that forces 5ghz devices to stay on 5ghz because often roaming to 2.4ghz would be better in most home setups with less access points.

My iPhone is on a 650mb link three rooms away from the AP right now.

Yip, I went ahead and added another VLAN with it's own wifi SSID.
Still busy moving devices over but I'm happy with what I've got.

It's a bit of tinfoil hat, but also a bit of just wanting to see what's all possible. Getting to know my Unifi setup a bit better

I'll have a look at that beta setting, it may be on in my case.

Yeah look under the screen where you set the SSID etc.

Turn the high performance mode off and turn the multicast on if that’s off.

If you find the options are greyed out then you’ve for automatic optimisation enabled, which lives somewhere under the main menus.
