Uniforum: You still suck!

In the process of switching a whole lot of domains to a new server. This is always a painful procedure with the coza domains thanks to Uniforum's archaic and painful ticket system. But this time the procedure is even more painful...

1) When doing the updates for the domains the system checks for nameservers etc. So it finds them and waits 24 hours for the tickets to be responded to. Then after 24 hours it fails to find a valid nameserver (funny as it was working fine 24hours ago..) and the process just fails and has to be started again! Fsk I hate Uniforum.

2) I had a batch of coza domains that should have updated at 2am this morning. So at 9am I call Uniforum as there has been no updates and no error emails. The guy says he will call his Director and sort it out. I just come in now at 5pm and see the updates stil havent happened. Call Uniforum again and they say they are having delays updating domains today. FFS, I hate Uniforum.

All the com net and org domains and even the org.za ones were done in a few clicks of a mouse yet here I am still battling for days, callling Uniforum, redoing updates cos their system is buggy.

Yeah I noticed the downtime today - was also trying to update some domains. Drives me crazy how sucky the system is. It's nice for registering (sort of anyway) but for anything else it's completely crap.
 
On the other side I (and other people) was having issues with iburst today.

Maybe Uniforum runs on iburst? :D

Seriously - what do you need to be a domain registrar such as uniforum?

A lot of politics, and a mind for monopoly :) In most other countries with a lot of internet users & ISP's, one could easily become a domain registrar (granted, you need a minimum domain quota on your list, and some cash), but in South Africa, only UniForum can register domains

Then you should try and MOVE (not update) a .com / .net / .biz / etc domain. After the other registrar has released it, it takes 5 days to update.

za.net can often take up to 3 weeks to register, or update!

Are you actually getting a response out of the ZANIC guys? I've been trying to change the DNS servers on a few .za.net domains I have for several months now. I'm having to keep paying for a hosted server simply because it's the primary NS for these domains. ZANIC simply doesn't respond to my update requests.

yea, we have a few za.net domains & clients with za.net domains. Like I said, it takes about 3 weeks to update, but the updates normally go through
 
I'm going through agony with these guys at the moment. I just recently started offering hosting to my clients on a US based server and have my own nameservers set up there.

I have no problems at all with .com/net/info/org TLD's at all. As soon as I start sending requests to Uniforum for .co.za names we start having fun and games. One minute its up, next minute its rejecting.

I registered a coza name on Monday and by some miracle it went through immediately. The next day I try to register another one, changing only the domain name on the form, all other data stayed the same, and guess what happens... no nameservers found!!

That's it for me and coza, I'm afraid. If I get a client who wants to use that sub-domain and host on my system I am afraid I will just have to charge nothing under R1,000 for setting up the DNS via Uniforum. Wånkers.

BTW, why can't we use the .za TLD?
 
I, too, have always disagreed with their system. It's become stagnant because of no competition and they don't even bother to program a control panel of some kind (set that expense off from support and there you go).

I remember the time their e-mail server was down and my registrations couldn't go through. I promptly called and while struggling to hear what the lady was saying, asked if I could do it over the phone - I wasn't allowed to. OK, fine, I thought, I then asked if I could fax my information through - same answer - a plain, no.
 
A few years ago they had the 'no delay word' option which was basically a password you supplied when registering a domain. If you ever wanted to update you simply supplied this password and the whole stupid ticket system was bypassed and the update processed immediately.

When they stopped this I called to ask why and was told it was due to abuse. Well thanks Uniforum for playing nanny but if people cant keep their passwords safe and you cant design a decent system similar to what the civilised world is using then why should I have to suffer?
 
We recently had a field day trying to transfer a .org.za domain. First Mweb blatantly ignored the domain transfer tickets, althoug the client issues a cancellation form 4 times, so I put it on hellopeter.com, and the very next morning I get a call saying they will accept it. Another week goes by, and only then do they accept it.

The problem then came in with IS (org.za registrar) who apparently had problems with their mailserver - 2weeks later it got updated, but with the wrong info. So, today, another week later the domain has finally been transfered, and the client didn't have email for a month!
 
Surely there is something we can do? What about forming an alliance against .co.za as a viable domain name for hosting until they update their system?

I am still none-the-wiser w.r.t. who actually controls the .za TLD. If we could bypass Uniforum and register our own sub-domains of .za that would be 1st prize.
 
The simple solution would be that they stop being so pig headed and arrogant and listen to their clients. But that would be a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiig ask.....
 
Only problem is we still battle with existing co.za domains. I would much rather see the co.za administration sorted out and brought in line with rest of them.
 
So if a group of concerned webmasters got together and petitioned ZA owners to let somebody else take over administration of .co.za maybe we would get somewhere.

We'll just be very certain not to let it fall into the hands of Telkom or MWEB. ;)
