Uninet speeds?

Hi I have been searching the forum about uninet speeds.

I have the 512 line for R800 per month uncapped/shaped....
It is terribly slow. 20k at night and 0.5 -10k in the day. AAaarrgg!!!!! :(

On my dls 1 meg line i get between 150 - 400k a sec.

So i want to know it anyone has the same line from uninet and what r your speeds.

Can it get better or must i just cancel it.

i'm getting about the same as you. Uninet have gone DOWN totally in the last year or so. I've tried talking to them, but their reasoning is "its within the contention ratio"

its gotten so bad that one can't even browse 2 websites at the same time without one of them timing out....

I'm dissing their crap as soon as i get get ADSL installed.

How long have you been with them?

The speeds have been slow this month so far but Im giving them the benefit of the doubt, as usally I average over 40KB (on the 512) after 5pm. Considering the competition, uncapped still works for me, as long as speeds pick up again.
 
On the 128k package I get a relatively constant 15 kbytes/s (off-peak; daytime speeds are good enough for browsing and email only). There were a couple of hours of downtime this month, which I haven't experienced before. Otherwise, the speeds seem stable for me. I will keep an eye on the downtime in the following months.
(connecting to the Wynberg transmitter)

One annoyance: POP/SMTP to my GMail is very, very heavily "shaped".

I have found my mistake.

Uninet:sick: = 64kbps. NOT!!! 512kbps

Uninet and is using a different syntax to Telkom for their connection.
Strange could not find that statement on their site:confused:

I am sorry that i am such a NOOB!!! and that it has taken me about a year to figure this out. Silly me, should have payed more attention in the kbps/kbit maths lesson.

So if u r thinking in NOOB terms these r the rates for Uninet:sick: and Telkom:
btw telkom should change there tc syntax (kbps) to tcng syntax (kbit) like the rest of the world.... its just to confusing.:rolleyes:

No, Darkhorse, that's totally incorrect (unless you're being sarcastic).

kbps = kilobits per second = 1000 bits per second
KB/s = kiloBytes per second (= 8x kbps) = 8000 bytes per second
KiB/s = KibiBytes per second = 8192 bytes per second

Telkom's speeds are all given in kilobits per second.
 
Ja, and so are Uninets. They are using the same syntax and so does the rest of the world, except they would talk in mbps more often :(

I see Uninets prices are pretty good, they must have gone down some time. R800 for an uncapped account is great, I'd probably go for the 256kb line, it looks like they can't handle 512 properly.

No but this is what i trying to tell you. Its not 256 its 32 for R600 a month.
You r falling for the same thing i did.

Uninet:

I don't understand this i am not an expert on bandwidth terminology

Because Uninet is wireless, you could have bad signal or they could just be overselling their product etc.

If 512kbit was = 64kbps then your max theoretically would be 8KB/s, so you shouldnt be able to get 20.4KB/s at all.

512kbit/s is actually a theoretical max download speed of 64KB/s.
 
On my 128k (R400) account, I get very close to a constant 15 kbytes/s, i.e. 15000 * 8 = 120 000 bps (off-peak), which is pretty much as advertised.

Contention Ratio Rubbish!

I have a 256kilobits line now for about 4 - 5 months, was brilliant to start off with.

Full 32K Speed DL's for local and international.
Now it suxs (started about 2 months after getting the line), going at like 4kb to 12kb then 18kb and drops again. Continiously spikes. Wasn't so bad but lately it's been horrible.

After hours support can do nothing as they say (will have to check in the morning and get back to me - which they never do), so what's the point of having after hours support?

Uninet's explanation was contention ratio.

But here's the thing, local bandwidth is no problem at all full 32kb speeds.
Only international bandwidth is affected.

So if it's contention on the line, both international and local would be affected.

Uninet's still looking in to this a month later!

I'm going to escalate tomorrow to a customer service manager and see how far I get. The technical support feedback is so poor as it is.

Will let you guys know.
 
Uninet clarification

Hi all

I got uninet yesterday in Edgemead and have been battling ever since. All shaping is turned off after 5pm and turned on at 8am. Fair enough, no one wants P2P downloading destroying lines during the day, i can accept that for 128K link for R 400 uncapped and unshaped(as per the website states under the F.A.Q.).

However i'm disgusted to be told by a consultant that yes there is no "shaping" all P2P traffic is still shaped after 5 in some manner, there's a pool of BW available for all customers P2P traffic and that's shared between the customer.

The contention is not a problem as when downloading via http e.g. microsoft one gets the full speed.

I've logged a ticket and escalated. Anyone else with any feedback please post here it would be appreciated. The way to deal with this is not to flame Uninet but rather see if we can comeup with a solution that suits all. Let's rather be a little pro-active in our complaints and not just flame.

I seem to have the same issues. HTTP/FTP runs fine at about 15 kilobytes/s. P2P is maybe at best a third of that, if you're lucky.

POP/SMTP access to GMail is also very heavily "shaped" (as to be almost unusable).
 
I see, will keep you updated. As per the contract I signed it implies no shaping and is actually stated that traffic will only be shaped AFTER 5pm and not before 8am.

Will let you know how it goes, they seem like a reasonable bunch of people.
