Ok, so today I flip open my macbook and low and behold it asks me if I want to connect to the uninet wifi network. It must just have been installed in my area today. I see that they give you free access to a few websites - wikipedia included. Very cool.

So here is my question. What is this installation that they are talking about? I can't think of any hardware that they need to install in order to provide me with access. The only thing I can think of is them storing my MAC address in their access control lists.

I guess it if wasn't for the installation fees I'd probably get it. I'll probably just get a wifi router for my adsl though. I hate having to plug my macbook into the router for internet access. Yes, I know that I am lazy. :-)

Anyone have experience with them?

uninet runs routers with custom written firmware, i think its mikrotik based routers. And no i dont think they will let you connect with your own router. Its just another way for them to control you and milk you.

Ahh gotcha. So they must be running some sort of mesh network then it seems. Anyway, then it one of my neighbours must have one of their routers because I am able to connect to it just using my MacBook.

There are two networks that just popped up this morning.
"Internet" and "Uninet-something something some numbers".

I can connect to it and browse certain websites like wikipedia, eskom, the police, news24, and a few more. So I was just interested in this. :)
