Hi All

2 questions:

1. How do I uninstall Linux (not that I want to) without going the format hdd route?

2. I installed Mandriva recently from a 4Gig dvd. Even with this, the system identified that there were a number of system updates which I then allowed to be downloaded. This amounted to a few hundred megs. If I do an install of Mandriva on another pc, how do I go about saving these updates so I can use to update the new pc with.

Thanks

To answer your first question, you can't "uninstall" Linux unless you are running it through a virtual machine on another operating system such as Windows XP. The reason being is that it is installed directly onto your computer just as XP would be. Just as you can't uninstall XP, you can't uninstall a Linux operating system.

With regards to your second question, I couldn't be exactly sure about Mandriva, but I'm sure it would be the same as Ubuntu where there is an update folder. Any updates you install are kept there and aren't deleted. I'm not too sure where the folder is, but I'll get back to you if I find out.

One suggestion regarding Mandriva, as far as I know there are no South African servers, unlike Ubuntu which have. South African Cap is quite a bit cheaper and if you are with Telkom, you'll get free South African Cap at the end of your international, so I just wait until the end of each month to update with no worries about how big the updates are. You can get it or order a free CD from www.ubuntu.com

which version? I have tried 9.1 and it seems a little buggy - twice now whilst downloading updates it froze on me. Do I use the LTS version. Also Firefox 3.5 just shut itself down more than once

IS hosts a mirror of Mandriva, as does the UCT LEG. I've used the IS one before and it is quite nice and speedy.

I've found where Ubuntu stores all update files.
/var/cache/apt/archives
Mandriva should be the same.

If you had problems with the last Ubuntu, try the 10.04 released end of next month (LTS Version). I'm sure you'll really enjoy it.
