Wow, what time period for the Union Buildings.

CAPE TOWN - Tomorrow South Africa will celebrate the centenary of the Union Buildings in Pretoria which have recently been declared a national heritage site by the South African Heritage Resources Agency (Sahra).

The agency says in terms of Section 27 of the National Heritage Resources Act, the Union Buildings meet the criteria based on its role on the political, cultural and social history of South Africa.

Sahra says the Union Buildings have remained a symbol of the Presidency and the seat of power of the Republic of South Africa.

Acting CEO of Sahra, Mmabatho Ramagoshi, said, “Preservation and management of the building due to its vulnerability, cultural and economic value is critical. The gardens of the Union Buildings and Meintjeskop are a popular venue for leisure, formal and large scale events associated with the seat of Government. As Sahra we will ensure that the protection of the site will include all the elements that make the landscape and not merely the architectural components of the complex.”

In 1994, the Union Buildings were occupied by Nelson Mandela and his cabinet as the first democratically elected president, a turning point in the political history of South Africa.

After his passing on 5 December 2013, Madiba also laid in state at the Union Buildings for three days.

National and international visitors can visit the Union Buildings to learn about the political the history of South Africa and the natural and cultural history, about landscape, art and architecture.

Tomorrow is also the 175 anniversary of the great trek! Voortrekker monument is going to be awesome :)

Symbol of apartheid and white colonialist oppression, should be destroyed.

Let me try and explain, these fsckers are always on about how bad the colonists/apartheid was (granted it was a bad thing) and then they go on about replacing all the symbolic icons like the springbok etc, they always biatch about the western imperial influence but the fscking love driving in their mercs, bmw's etc, they wrap their arms in breitlings, longines, rolex etc watches, They only use the best private western medical institutions while they tell their 'subjects' to use garlic & beetroot. A letter from a sangoma is as good as a letter from a medical doctor. They send their children to private schools. The presidential flight crew is all white & professional. Yet they all scream about the bad white man, they're a bunch of fscking hypocrites.

They are using buildings, roads, infrastructure etc designed by these bad mofos back in those days which they probably did in the name of nationalism but as long as it lines their pockets it's cool.

One just has to look at your local gov performance and you will realise that we are fscked, how many times do you have to pay a bee company to fix a pothole? It's been three years now and every year they fix it like 15 times but it's just getting worse, every time it rains the thing turns into a sinkhole that would swallow lesotho. In all my life I have never encountered schite like this. Lets not even get into something like water & electricity as that's even more of a ballache. You think I'm complaining, the poor sods in the informal settlements are even worse off. They say you get the government that you deserve and i agree with that!

:wtf: Relax

This article is about the Union Buildings centenary.

Please don't make it political. There's enough of that already without you polarizing this article.

I get his point, but there's no need to spite us all in the name of the new guavamunt.

I actually forgot the Union Buildings is 100 years old today.

Does anyone know when i can visit the union building?
can i go anytime or they close the gate at a certain time?

thanks, i can even walk there latish or they close the gates to the gardens?

The bottom is usually closed afaik, but you can enter through the top, where the street access is. Not sure what time they lock up.

I think it's open almost 24 hours since I usually go there up until 11pm and as early as 5am.

I've never seen the bottom locked up except when there are events (The entrance at the traffic lights near Sheraton (?) Hotel which I use occasionally).
