I am thinking about doing the UNISA CENSE short courses.
http://cs-cert.unisa.ac.za/courses.htm

Just wanted to know if anyone has completed these courses and have any advice. Will these courses make me more employable as I don't have any formal qualification in I.T

No idea if they will really make you particularly employable but I enjoyed the C++ course and in comparison to a lot of other paid courses out there the institutional backing is something. Ultimately however an employer really should be interested in what skills you have. I suspect that as a demonstrator of formal qualifications they aren't a bad route.

I say go the full Monty and register for a formal Degree. It is an investment for your future.

I would do that but the costs are significantly higher and the duration is much longer part time.

I think seeing on your CV that you are busy studying a degree, even if not finished, shows dedication and willingness to better yourself. Certificates are usually quick fixes and may get you up to speed with certain things but generally fail to lay any proper foundation. I would say only do a certificate/short course if you already have a degree in the relevant field and want to prove you have advanced your skills on an adhoc basis.

I would rather hire someone with 1 solid degree than 3 or more certificates.

Any study is better than no study. So I would say do it, if it is all you can afford. I agree with other replies that a full degree is worth much more.

But, be sure it is in the field you are planning to work in. It is a serious waste of time and effort to study for years and then find out this is not the occupation you want to do.
