This is very similar to the DroidTV MX but has less storage i.e. 4GB vs 8GB on the DroidTV and 2 USB 2.0 ports vs 4 on the MX.

@Richardxtc: Should have very similar benchmarks to the G-Box Midnight MX2 and the DroidTV MX which are very similar if not identical.

I am extremely interested and i am going tp purchase an android tv box however seeing this atv520 made me start googling and i found the tronsmart mk908 with the following specs

Google Android 4.2 Jelly Bean;
Dual Heatsink,Dual Wifi Antenna;
Cortex A9 Rk3188 Quad Core CPU ,Quad Core Mali 400 GPU;
2GB DDR3 RAM,8GB NAND FLASH ROM
Bluetooth v4.0,wifi support 802.11 b/g/n
Support Netflix, XBMC, Droidmote, Tested by Geekbuying.com

And quite cheap to import as well :)

It also benchmarked 15k on antutu... Sort of like the s3 :)

You could add extra USB ports with a USB hub and extra storage with a microSD card although you shouldn't need more than 4GB of local storage, both are an inexpensive upgrade.

We can run an Antutu benchmark and post results.

The mk908 has a Rockchip chipset, these don't work well with HD playback (lots of discussions on this on the XBMC forum), while this unit may have more grunt in terms of a quad core CPU anything over 1Ghz (DC) is going to be overkill and you'll not see any benefit whatsoever in terms of performance when using the platform for media players.

Importing directly is obviously cheaper, that is until you have an issue with the device or require product support, shipping back to China not only takes long but costs money and is a laborious process, there's more value than you think in purchasing through a local channel :)

The device at AVSupply also has audio output via SPDIF.

I picked one up thius afternoon, been playing with it. My initial impressions are as 4 out of a possible 5. Its fast enough, Has Netflix and XBMC pre installed. I prefer the original skin though. Comes without batteries for the remote(maybe I am spoilt??). The onboard wifi is horrible. Cant even stream a 720p animated show in the same room as my router. Luckily I will uses the Ethernet port instead.

It is a much better unit the the MK809 and the MK802. I gave away the MK802 and Mk809 was used all of 5 minutes before it found the bottom of a drawer. This is a keeper though. Thanks for the special price.
Apologies for the above, I hereby withdraw my recommendation. Though the interface is 1080p. XBMC does NOT run at anything above 1280x720p. So this device is less than useless to me. I am returning it to Uniterm in the morning....I have a buddy in the states at the moment will try to get him to bring me a OUYA.

You do not have to use XBMC. You can play videos directly from the main android interface, and they do run at 1080.

Can someone please advise if there is an alternative remote for this, and how would you get it to work with the device? Working well sofar, the remote is just to tiny, and lacks some buttons.

Maybe this will work: http://www.flirc.tv/

The android Media Centre's can decode 1080 content but will downscale to 720.

As for the remotes, why not try one of the cellphone remotes? they work really well, if you have an Android phone download Yatse, if you're on an iPhone then download the XBMC remote. Other options are to get a Flirc and then you could use any remote control or get a MCE remote control.

thanks for the suggestions. I use the xbmc remote for xbmc, but it does not work outside of xbmc. I'll have a look at the others. Also, I cannot get youtube to work on this device, any ideas why?

The remote doesn't know whether or not its operating from within XBMC or Android so its strange that it only works within XBMC, the key presses are also the same for both the OS and XBMC.

Youtube is also fairly straight forward, providing you've got an internet connection it should work. What I'd suggest you do is factory default the unit, you can do this under the settings option in Android, then once this is done, reconfigure it and see if your unit is operating as it should.

Thanks. I was trying to avoid the factory reset, but I'll give it a shot. in regards to the remote, it might just be a 1d10t error from my side... It is deifnitely connected to the internet, the page loads, it is just the videos that I try to play that does not work.

I might get a second one of these and load linux on it, seems fun to play around with

Overall, I am quite happy with it, can watch the russian and UK channels via streaming, which is why I purchased it initially, for a fraction of the price of an HTPC, and accessing videos on a shared drive plays well, even over wifi.

The other option is to try uninstall Youtube completely and reinstall it.

You cannot load Linux on this particular model, it will only run an Android based OS.

I'll give reinstalling a shot. Tried the xbmc remote and yatse again, as soon as you go out of XBMC it does not work. Is there a way to use one of those generic remotes, as the device already has an IR received. I am looking to set one up for my mum, but she is visually impaired, so need a remote with big buttons.

I'm a bit confused, when you said the remote was working only with XBMC and not Android I thought you meant the white remote that is shipped with the unit? this remote should work with both. Yatse will work only from within XBMC (uses TCP/IP and a port number to connect to XBMC and then sends commands over the network to control XBMC) and will not work on Android outside of XBMC.

If you're wanting to use a generic remote the easiest way would be to get something like the flirc and then either use an existing remote or get yourself a universal remote.

My apologies, I meant that the remote that it ships with(It is black in my case) is too small, and I am looking for an alternative
