I have an iPhone and on contract with CellC and have ported from Vodacom, + year ago.
I am receiving "Unknown caller" calls of +- 8 -15 sec duration...I answer then nothing.
Any idea as to what this is or how to obtain more info as to who/why?
Thanks!

Someone is pinging you to see if your number is valid for real spam calls.

Just say nothing after a bit and let the caller waste his/her money on the call to you.

Don't answer numbers from unknown numbers, or just block them completely (depending on what phone you're using).

Thanks for the replies!
@DJZ unfortunately I have some clients which call via switchboards and always come up as "Unknown".
@Chris14 they are only a few seconds....5-15 max it seems.
@ AstroTurf: this was my thought, can you say more as I have little /no knowledge on what this means in practice, and a solution...I have put in a call to a gent at CellC re this and possible sim swap security.

Answer the call BUT don't speak until the other person says something.
In other words don't speak until you spoken too.
The calls are phishing to see if there is a live person on that number.
After awhile of non verbal communication the calls will stop. I aslo found that if you leave the line open the calls stop quicker.

@Spiff, thanks, will do as you suggest, I have been answering as I would any normal call, there was never a word from the other 'party' BUT who / what and why are these type of calls being made?

National opt out register kills most of them. For the rest end the call.

When I get these I respond "If this is an obscene phone call, you'll have to breathe louder"

Agree 100%. I just cannot understand why, when I tell my colleagues about this they balk as soon as they have to add their ID number. Newsflash: Your frigging ID no is everywhere.

Update: I followed the advice of answering, but not saying a word, last call was on Tuesday past.
Thanks.
