In Device Manager under Windows 2000, I have an Other devices -> Unknown device thing with a question mark in front of it and an exclamation over the question mark (like not working properly).

AFAIK that means no driver installed for that device hence the device is not operational.

Problem is that I don't know what device is it. I told windows to search for drivers on various driver CDs as well as in Windows updates, but nothing! How can I see what device it is, if I know what it is I can figure out where to find driver, but if I don't have a clue what device it is, so what do I do?

Right click uninstall the device. Then click anywhere in the device manager box and a small search icon will appear at the top. Search for new devices and it should tell you what the part is and ask you for a driver. Otherwise if your windows is legal you can send report from your Pc and the M$ will get back to you with a driver and the name in about... mmm lets see 3 months.

umm microsoft wont help you

if its oem you have to go to the ppl you bought it from

microsoft who had to give their investors billions because they had to much money wont support their products

gotta love em

i recomend gettin xp 64 bit because its the same price as xp pro

XP 64 bit edition is rather dead in the water ... check out how many drivers exist for it.

So if all your peripherals work fine then Windows does not recognize some parts of your motherboard/chipset.

Did you install the configuration files ???.

see, the problem is that I don't know what the device is, type, brand nothing (that is what I am trying to find out), my PC works fine as it is, it is just annoying me that it shows there unknown stuff, probably is some of the onboard stuff, but trying to search the drives cd that came with the board yields nothing, so I am stuck

yes the PC seems to work fine, but I haven't tested everything of course, only the stuff that I use, yes I presume is some of the onboard stuff, but then why is it not finding the bloody driver on the CD that came with the baord

Is there maybe some install program on the CD that came with the board to install extra .inf files or something like that? (Maybe listed in a menu when you autorun the CD.) I knew I had to do that for my MSI board a while ago.

I have installed everything that the CD offered to install by itself. I see that there are stuff on the CD which seem irrelevant to my hardware (probably the manufacturer uses one single generic CD for range of products), but I don't want just to install stuff without knowing what I am doing as this will ultimately lead to more problems
