unknown file type... help :(

Hi,

I have a bunch of files from an unknown programme. The only thing that seems to open the files that contain graphics are Corel Draw and OpenOffice Drawing. Once I've opened the file in OpenOffice Drawing I can save it as an *.odg and the files are then easily accessible. The remainder of the files are pretty much locked. How do I find out what programme these files have been converted into? We suspected Qark, but that doesnt seem to be working either.

Does anybody know what I can use to convert the files? The files make up a book that was converted into this unknown file type and we cant source the original person / programme....


What to do? Any help will be greatly appreciated - a friend has been employed to edit this book, but we cant get it into a format that can be edited.
 
Does the files have no extension what so ever? :/
maybe an example can be uploaded for us to play with please? :D
 
Might be WordPerfect documents - what is the extensions of the files? (*.doc, *.xls etc)

And, yes, as the postman pointed out, google will help.

um, you go to all this trouble to ask for our help, and then you don't actually tell us what the extension of the file is? :rolleyes:

Have a look at ACDsee if it's relating to graphics files - can read most known file types and will allow you to edit and/or save as a different format.

Do the bunch of files have an extension at all? What is their extension? If it was pages/pictures that were converted to a "book" then it could be that there is a self-contained small program that runs it as such, and will enable you to extract them - this may have been deleted, but could be obtained from the web quite easily. You will need the file extension though.
 
You can try opening them in Notepad. It'll all probably all look like mambo jambo but some files have a reference to the file extension/type up at the top
 
If you have access to a Linux system, you could run the "file" command on these unknown files. it will tell you what it is.
 
I didnt give the file extention because I cant see it. I'm sure I recall something about there being a setting where you can hide / display file extentions. I agree that would be a great place to start but i dont know how to see the extention :(
