Unleaded fuel, 95 or 93?

I recently moved up to the Free State and here I am being offered 93 or 95 octane unleaded fuel for my cars. In the Western Cape I was using 95 octane. What now? Do I continue using 95 or should I step down and go with the cheaper 93 octane?

This is for a 2011 1.25 Hyundai i10 auto & a 2006 Nissan Almera 1.8.
 
That recommendation is for sea level. There's 20 percent less oxygen up here so less chance of detonation.
 
While ontopic, does any one know if Shell V power is 99 RON is sold in SA?
 
My car, a 2000 Fiat Palio 1.2, can run on 93 at the coast, but I can't get it here. I spend money on 95 each month without any gain.

Check your manual, but many cars can run on 93 inland. There is even a levy on 95, to discourage its use inland.

BS. Both my nissans say 95 ron minimum. Nissan SA recommend 95ulp for both inland and coastal use.

Best to ask your car manufacturer.

FYI you may end up with worse fuel consumption on 93 than 95. I have tried it on a few newer cars.
 
95 will only be needed inland on cars with very high compression ratios (10:1) or higher and forced induction cars.

I laugh my ass off when I see idiots filling their cars with 95 that don't need it up here.

The higher the octane the slower the burn, so a car that doesn't need 95 could end up with worse fuel consumption as it cannot extract the energy from the fuel as efficiently as it would from 93.

No you don't magically get better fuel consumption on 95, it's probably the same or worse. You may say but I get X extra km/l on 95, no you don't. No one can test fuel consumption accurately enough during daily driving to claim that.

Higher octane will only improve consumption and performance if a car is knocking and retarding the timing on 93.
 
My Audi A3 car manual tells me to use 95.

On my previous Opel Astra 1.6, I found that I got better fuel consumption with 95 compared to 93. I do drive 110KMs to work and back on highway though, and this is why I saw I got some more mileage when using 95.
 
I see most new cars recommend using 95. I'd consult the manual / Google / the fuel cap.
 
Use the better one. 95>93 and "octane" sounds like somethings that makes cars go faster. Its also more expansive so it should be better. So 95 it is...
