Unlearning a bad habit

It will take more than just an elastic band to have me drop some of my bad habits.

A psychiatrist shared the following technique with me:

Wear a loose-fitting elastic band around one of your wrists. Every time you engage in the habit, snap yourself with the elastic band so as to cause some pain.

Some years ago I unlearned some bad habits (for example dramatically reduced coffee and sugar intake) through self-hypnosis. A problem with self-hypnosis though is that it takes great mental strain and lately I'm too mentally fatigued to do that sort of thing.

Does anybody know any other techniques?

I used to swear a lot as a boy while chatting with mates, I read about the method somewhere and therefore pinched myself every-time I realized that I used a swear word. Eventually I would stop just before I uttered the words. It worked for a long time and only in later years I fell back into the habit again but still much reduced as when I was a kid.
