hi guys

pls help me understand this. webafrica sells 10gig of local bandwidth for R190, but don't you get unlimited local bandwidth (soft cap) anyway after you pass your 3gig cap? or is that just limited to telkomsa connections (the unlimited local bandwidth).

help! confusion!

oh really? so you saying that if i sign up with mweb for standard 3gig account, and run out of cap in 10 days, then for the next 20 days i have unlimited local bandwidth? how can they be offering this and yet telkom, who sells it to them, is not?!

1) According to ICASA regulations all local bandwidth is supposed to be uncapped.
2) So far only Mweb has actually conformed to that regulation (kudos to them!) Telkom and all the others have stuck with charging you for local which is NOT what ICASA had in mind.
3) Mweb started it as a trial to see how it would go. And I think they got a lot of new business because of it. They initially did not put a cap on it, but after a few months started telling people over the phone that it was capped at 1&10, 2&20, 3&30 (international-local). But they never did cut anybody off.
4) A week or two ago they started threatening to cut people off, but then backtracked on that again and said it will always remain uncapped. They did say that the total number of people who are actually using the local never goes above their total allotment of local internet, so I doubt that they are losing money on the deal yet... but they said they do reserve the right to charge for those going over one day.
5) My guess is that they are holding on until Seacom goes live and prices drop at which stage they will hopefully make it a permanent feature.

Yay! Mweb!

thanks so much gary! i really appreciate the detailed reply. now i get the full picture!

Stuff a 3GB account. Get a 1GB account - also comes with uncapped local.

(Their pricing is pretty high for intl. bandwidth.)

Thats good to know. Do they offer a reliable news server?

If so I might just get a 1GB account and move to them.

No, no reliable news server. You are stuck with the SAIX server. I prefer to use it on torrents or local downloads (local list).

Am I missing something here? Mweb charges 3c per mb for their local only usage! I don't see any 1 here mentioning that. You get 10 and after that 3c per mb which is R30 a GB so its cheaper to use Telkom if you are planning to go over!

EDIT: Just saw this is a old topic when mweb had unlimited local!

Their hostname for "Mweb's newsserver" just redirects to the SAIX newsserver IP. They do not have their own newsserver.

It appears they have changed their conditions :

Local Only Data Cap

MWEB provides you with 10GB of free local bandwidth to surf locally (South African) hosted websites and content. Your local only data usage only begins once your data cap has been reached. Once you have reached your free local only cap you are charged 3c per MB thereafter for local surfing.

So they are charging +-R30 per Gb of local over your 10Gb allocated. And all accounts only have 10Gb local even the 10Gb international account!

Screen. They do charge when you go over!
