You unfortunately have to get it unlocked by your carrier in the States; in SA nothing is typically locked, hence they will not be able to help.Hi, I'm moving to SA from the States and have a locked iPhone 4. Is it possible to unlock it so it can be used with South African sim cards and do you have any suggestions as to where I can have it unlocked in Johannesburg?

So aside from going the JB route, it's best to talk to your States carrier, explain your situation and ask them to unlock it.
For your consideration: Instead of them seeing you as a lost customer, maybe it's best just to state that you will be traveling extensively abroad, and need it unlocked to use local SIM cards.
Having done more research, I've decided that this is the route I'm going to go with. It looks like iPhone unlocks are problematic at best, so I'm just going to terminate my contract early and have AT&T unlock it following that. Thanks for your advice.
