Unmetered / uncapped webspace & bandwidth webhosting offerings

BUT, unmetered bandwidth in hosting, and unlimited ADSL is NOT the same thing. When hosting companies talk about unmetered bandwidth it literally means they don't meter (measure) how much bandwidth you use.

And, 99% of the time your bandwidth usage will be limited to a 100MB/s network, or sometimes to a 10MB/s - which is also always shared between you and other clients on that server. a 100MB/s network connection will allow for 34TB data transfer per month, at full speed.

Normal servers with 1 or 2, or even 4 SATA HDD's hardly ever manage to sustain 100MB/s data transfer since bottleneck often lies with the SATA bus & HDD's. Then, you also need to have a server grade network card (desktop network card's often max-out @ ave. 42 - 65MB/s) and decent switches which can offer wirespeed transfer rates.

Now, let's say your equipment does manage to max out everything (i.e. you have a high speed SAS SAN, top notch Layer 2 switches, routers & firewalls, bonded server grade NIC's, etc) and your datacenter's network can max out @ 100MB/s, so you get 34TB data transferred, up & down (so, let's say it's 8TB up & 26TB down) - but with 300 domains, then you can easily say each domain is limited to 116GB up & down. At the same time you need to worry about high IO loads, which will use a LOT of RAM & CPU to compensate for all the transfers.


Sure, the math could go many different ways, depending on what equipment you have, what equipment your DC has, what limits they give you, what connection speed the other clients / servers have which you connect to, etc. etc. In the real world these figures are more than often way off due to many other limitations

Business is about having edge over competition, no use in complaining about it

What I do agree with is offering unlimited bandwidth on hosting especially windows hosting you have to be very carefull as most companies offer this and then restrict you in their terms and conditions that you can only use 10 Gig Bandwidth a month

These hosts are used by (mostly) those who are unlikely to hit those specific limits,warning people of snakes in the grass only serves to make you look like an angry competitor when you offer more expensive packages that would be overkill to their needs

Frankly paying 2x-4x as much as other providers for the honour of knowing exactly when you'll be cut off instead of guessing is a tad naff

And our clients (we have unmetered bandwidth in the USA as well) also get exactly what they pay for and expect. No hidden charges or limits. Even if our TOS. Yet, I've never had one client complain, "I have too much bandwidth, please limit me" or "My website uses 200GB traffic, please don't suspend me".


The hard truth is, the clients on shared hosting who don't want to pay more for more expensive hosting options (VPS / dedi's / cluster / etc) are happy to pay a set fee and know that nomatter how much bandwidth their websites use, they don't get billed for it. And the client's who's websites are so big that they need their own dedicated server will also pay for the extra bandwidth if needed. But, since all our dedi's include 5TB bandwidth usage as a standard they'll probably get another server (and thus doubling their bandwidth) before they get to their bandwidth limit.

But, and no offence, grow up. This is business and most businesses are in it for the money (would you run your servers with an ISP who don't have enough money to pay their rent or staff?) and need to come up with ways to offer something which others don't. It's called competition. And frankly we've been spoiled in South Africa where there is no competition and very few people will the balls to make real competition in the market.

All client's website gets backed up to dedicated backup servers 3 different datacenters.

We are the host and we benefit from client's content / data / accounts on the server. Why would we then delete it? Do you?

Noted,though you providing an alternative service is like KFC complaining McDonalds hasn't been in the chicken business as long as they have so how can you know the quality of their Chicken...

Much like Webafrica complaining about unsustainability of uncapped internet,you are white-knighting with pretty obvious information to the people who are unlikely to need it ;)
