Hey guys,

I see there are a few threads about Discovery insure but I thought to start one similar to the Vitality and Ebucks thread for tips on rewards etc.

I am only starting with them on Thursday.

Hows everyone's experience ?

-Drive like a grandma
-Always fill up at BP and use the card provided to you
-Hope your tracking device doesn't break multiple times like mine, needing about 7 replacements

Haven't activated the tracking device after a myBB member said he'd been penalised for sharp cornering and fast acceleration. Who needs that in their lives?

Vitality points are minimal for me. I only earn them on healthy shopping at WW, so it's the odd R20/R30 here and there. Will watch this thread for Ebucks - didn't know Discovery had them.

They do?

How does the tracker meausre phone use while driving ?

I have heard leaving it in one place but still being on it doesnt pick it up. Only moving around the car. Is it like a distance from the tracker to your phone ?

JM - nice to see you growing up decently :) - We went to the same school ;)

Look, don't go with Discovery etc. If you living on your own/away from your parents, get insurance from a broker and insure your place with your cab.

Insurance thru Mutual & Federal has trumped Discovery, Outsurance, Budget, MiWay and King Price year after year, and even now with the acquisition of my motorbike.

I am saving in excess of R1000 a month by going thru a broker.

Been with them since 2012 and have had only positive experiences. Have put a few claims through which increased my risk and thus premiums.

The driving thing isnt an issue to me and i dont drive like an old age pensioner. I get back about R200-R300 per month in cash which is super.

Is M&F the broker? I thought they were just an insurance company?

Don't waste your time, money or good driving. Having been with them for 4 years i never had a problem. Until i had to claim last month that is...

With M&F i have never had hassles. But with discovery they will find ways not to pay out. Basically receipts are the only proof of ownership. Anything of value needs to be in a safe. Valuation certs are required...an to be updated. Otherwise your precious ring does not get paid out. Oh...and the best is, don't expect formal feedback from the 'claims specialist'. Just a phone call and ultimatim to sign the Agreement of Loss.

And lastly...that excess funder that some of you are saving up on? There is also 3 clauses regarding the non payment of the 50% allocation thereoff in the event of your cancelation. So you wont get 50%...you get 0%. Now THAT is clear clause writing.

So good luck...

Discovery Insure, Avis launch SafeDrive: Keeping drivers safe while using technology

Avis has launched a SafeDrive app which is integrated with Discovery Insure's breakthrough telematics technology and its behavioural app-based programme, proven to help make South African roads safer.

The app is available to all Avis Rent a Car customers at 10 locations nationally as of the the end of July. It is available on Android and IOS, so customers will be able to access trip data, see their driving scores, learn what they can do to improve them, and redeem discretionary daily rewards.

Safer driving

Rainer Gottschick, chief executive at Avis Rent a Car Southern Africa, says: "We’re excited to partner with Discovery Insure to launch Avis SafeDrive to encourage our customers to have a safer driving experience.

"Avis data shows that rental cars are involved in a higher rate of accidents due to the frequency of their use and because clients use them with less caution than they would their own vehicles. With Avis SafeDrive, clients receive immediate feedback on their driving through the app, and are guided to accumulate points for good driving to unlock daily rewards such as a free coffee, smoothies or meals."

SafeDrive features?

Priced at R45 a day, the new product offers car rental customers a range of additional safety features which include:

• ImpactAlert: In the event of a harsh G-force affecting the vehicle, an automatic alert is sent to Discovery Insure emergency services, which triggers immediate assistance. This ensures that when a client is injured or unable to call for help, it will already be on its way.

• Panic Button: A discreet tool for any emergency - press your smartphone’s power button five times in quick succession to dispatch immediate assistance to your location.

• Access to the Avis 24-hour Breakdown and Emergency Call Centre.

• Severe Weather alerts via SMS, warning you to stay off the roads.

"More than 90% of accidents are the result of poor driver behaviour,” explained COO of Discovery Insure Francois Theron. "This includes speeding, using a mobile phone while driving and driving late at night."

Theron adds: "When paired with a smartphone, our telematics technology measures and reports back in real-time on acceleration, braking, cornering, speed, driving time, distance, trip location and mobile-phone use while driving. Discovery Insure’s accident frequency has dropped by 11% over 5 years as a result of rating and incentivising clients to improve their driving behaviour."

“With people being more important than cars, we would like to encourage our customers to use a system that has been tested and proven. We are committed to implementing technological advancements that encourage a safe driving experience for all our customers,” concluded Gottschick.

And then get around R7.50 back each month. It's not worth it.

I got cheaper (better) insurance elsewhere, and I can fill up wherever I want - usually at Shell, cause I get a clicks clubcard point for every litre.

My points are on the red and I still get about 200 bucks back a month.

You can use the vitality drive card at BP and Shell, I only fill at shell.

Completely agree. I canceled mine last month. The device kept breaking and you have to go fetch the replacement each time.
The R20 in fuel back wasn't worth it.
