TWO DEAD IN TURKEY CLASHES AFTER BOY'S FUNERAL
A protester and policeman died in clashes in Turkey after the funeral of a 15-year-old boy who has become the symbol of anti-government demonstrations, local media reported Thursday, citing officials. The protester, aged 22, died in Istanbul of a head injury. The police officer suffered a heart attack in the eastern province of Tunceli, possibly from exposure to tear gas. Police used tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon to disperse protesters on Wednesday in Istanbul, where tens of thousands had gathered for the funeral of Berkin Elvan, the boy who was in coma after being hit in the head by a tear gas canister last year. Clashes between activists and police in riot gear continued late into the night. Protesters called Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan a "killer" and demanded his resignation. There were also clashes in other cities. The unrest puts Erdogan and his governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) under pressure ahead of local elections at the end of the month.
