Unshaped ADSL - It can't really be unshaped...

I am now a happy ADSL user (only happy because I'm not on crappy Sentech anymore).

I have two accounts; a 6gb shaped for all my usual activities and a 1gb unshaped account that I use for the sole purpose of playing World of Warcraft.

However, it seems to me that unshaped DSL is a hoax. When I connect to WoW on shaped, my latency usually starts out around 1200 and drops to around 550 after a minute or two. It then floats around 500 - 800 for the rest of my session.

When I connect on unshaped, however, I start out around 300ms, but after a few minutes, this rises to between 500 and 800 - same as on shaped - and stays there for my session.

I once also left a p2p application running by accident when I switched to unshaped and my latency on WoW was 1800 and rose to 3000!

Now, is my ISP doing something wrong? Or is Telkom lying about unshaped DSL - because this sure as hell is not unshaped.

Yeah, really strange that you're getting the same latency as myself (on a shaped line).

Just close all applications that you don't need running when playing WoW.

Alternatively, you could use Clipse's Low-Latency gaming package.

What would you all suggest to be the best option for gaming? I play DAoC atm and want a good line - shaped or unshaped? I'm hearing so many different things from people and now I'm not sure what to go with

I use an unshapped account, and the difference is huge between the shaped and the unshaped account.

Simple test - www.testyourvoip.com will score very poorly with a shaped account, but excellent with an unshaped account.

Also note that on the username the following are different:

***@dsl512us.telkomsa.net as opposed to the ***@dsl512.telkomsa.net

I found out in the early days I was paying for an unshaped account but had just another shaped account!!!

Are you saying then, that if I want an account to do some P2P but mostly want good, predictable latency for voice, that I should look at an UNshaped account?

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good comparison of who offers shaped & unshaped accounts so I can make my ISP choice?

Telscum Liars?

I just signed up for an unshaped account wit an ISP other than Telkom.
It is in fact not unshaped, as the Kazaa speed is the same as the shaped account i have.
Having spoken to the owner of the bussiness that i got the unshaped account from, it seems that he will be talking to Telkom on monday about this.
So, yes, Telkom IS lying, they are truely the scum of the earth, and so is the ANC goverment who is sitting back and enjoying the exhorbitant profits that Telscum is making.
