Unshaped Already Implemented

i dont have any difference.... stil get to 560-700ms on WoW EU servers.
On my unshaped account i got 250-450ms so i have no improvement :(

me neither, no improvement, I like the comment about the placebo effect though ;)

Who is your ISP, for some strange reason WebAfrica and TelkomInternet Shaped and Unshaped is the same.

It shouldnt be speedier, latency should improve. Minor speed improvements for LimeWire etc yes

Still getting better skype figures using an unshaped SAIX account as compared to a standard SAIX account.

Wash your car with omo, it makes it go faster. Seriously there is no chance in hell telkom have unshaped running across the board now.

I did a test earlier to check. My shaped account on WebAfrica is 120ms slower than the Unshaped account with a ping to google. Makes no sense to me.

My Shaped account is Cybersmart and my unshaped account is WebAfrica. Why?

I tested now with Counter Strike Source

U.K Server - All three accounts were perfectly stable and did not jump up and down

WebAfrica Shaped - 340 - 345 (mostly stuck to 340,341)
WebAfrica Unshaped - 275 - 280 (Was around 276,277 most of the time)
TelkomInternet Shaped - 340 - 345 (mostly stuck to 340,341)

Conculsion.
Shaped accounts wouldnt be stable... right?

MrG, this is how i understand Telkom's shaping(and i may be completely wrong).

On an unshaped account a packets arrives at the international gateway, and it is sent on its way with no consideration to its port / protocol etc.

On a shaped account the packet arrives, a packet inspection takes place (adding some latency) if its port 80 --> transparent proxy, if its not port 80 its priority is determined and it is placed in the que - at the head of the que if prioritised or the back if not. It's wait in the que will be determined by how fast the que is moving ie the amount of international bandwidth and how many packets are being added to the que (demand on the adsl network).

So the effects of shaping are only really seen when the demands on the network is greater than the current international capacity. In the past few months i have noticed less effects of shaping on a shaped account, i guess because telkom have increased the available bandwidth.

What i think you are seeing today is simply a low demand so your shaping effect is reduced. The difference in ping (275 vs 340) is down too the added latency in determining the nature of the packet.

Not really. Any router worth it's salt (and I know Telkom's are pretty beefy) will hardly feel that kind of traffic inspection.

Unshaped pings to bbc.co.uk currently sit at 280 for me.

my ping on overseas servers have always been 400 permanently, moves up most by about 10ms. i guess we not unshaped cuz of the 80 ping difference between the accounts. the bastards
