Hi guys,

I need to choose an ISP.

Now i will mainly use my adsl for gaming on local servers. Eg saix.
So, i was wondering would unshaped adsl help local pings? Are tehre any ISP's that offer Unshaped but still the 3g cap?

Would anyone recomend an ISP for gamming? or any ISP for that matter.

Thanks alot.

ICE :)

No. Even with shaped (saix based) adsl accounts local ips are still unshaped. The "shaped" only refers to international bandwidth.

Yes. http://www.saol.com has a 3gb account for R399 and takes online signups.

SAOL is nice for their unshaped accounts. For shaped accounts go find your cheapest non-telkom/non-dotco ISP.

http://www.hellkom.co.za has a nice listing on the left side of ISPs

Interested in signing up with SAOL

Hi Tinuva

Just wanted to find out about your experience with SAOL. I mainly want to use my ADSL for gaming on international servers. Warcraft, Starcraft etc. And I want to get myself a copy of WoW. Maybe you can advise me on that as well. Where do I get a copy?

I want to get myself the 384/128k ADSL package with the R399.00 unshaped package.

Looking forward to your reply !

Thanks

I would like some comments on SAOL as well. Some ping results to google or WoW latency for that matter, that should be a good benchmark.
A unshaped 384kb/s account would work out to about R449 + R399 = R850, have a telephone line already. The 3GB cap doesn't bother me that much (not that I'm saying R850  p/m is cheap for capped unshaped 384K ) because I'm not a downloader.

thx.

Look be carefull. With unshaped accounts, if you reach cap it cuts of dead after cap. Eg. no internet at all till next month. My experience with saol have been pretty good so far. My account was created the same day I signed up. When they thought I had a problem with my account and email, they even called me to find out what exactly the problem was and helped me from that point on.

WoW pings to US is pretty good, 600ms on a very high population server, but lower on other servers. Too bad I chose a bad server to play on. People on the EU WoW servers get much better pings with WoW than me, about 400ms they said in another thread. The main point is, its a really stable account vs the shaped accounts.

I only had one problem thus far, and that is that I cant use http://userstats.adsl.saix.net/ to check my bandwidth usage, and saol doesnt have on their site either.

My biggest + point for the unshaped account, everything just works, even in the beginning and end of the month when the shaped accounts gets really slow.

So even local traffic is cut off after cap?

Dont Confuse people :P

Yes only the account get disabled, you are still able to use another shaped account. I wouldnt recommend unshaped accounts for everyday use, as its valuble bandwidth, thus I recommend it for Games/Stock-trading ect that needs speed and response to international sites.

It's a quote from Telkom.. they make one think that someone actually goes and pops the line from its socket to prevent further access :)

This smiley won't go away!!!

So is the following true:

3GB of International Bandwidth
Unlimited Local Bandwidth
Both get disabled when you reach your 3GB on international bandwidth ?

Can you maybe provide ping stats when playing on EU servers?

And where can I get WoW?

As both get disabled I dont think you could say unlimited local bandwidth, Your cap is 3GB, both local and international downloads and uploads count towards that. However, until you reach that 3GB, local traffic is just as fast normal shaped ADSL, but your international will(should) be considerably faster than shaped ADSL.

As for the wonderful WoW... go to channel #wow in za.shadowfire.org on irc. There are a couple of guys that can get u either a CD key or a boxed copy of WoW. Then U can use your SA credit card with a aussie or US billing address to subscribe and even pay for your game time.

Talking about wow, my latency in wow on ISDN is 400 - 900 on nerzhul, prolly the highest populated PVP server, so unshaped ADSL doesnt sound much better there... I want 200 - 400 :(

Well like I said, you will get a better ping on ISDN, but as soon as there is a lot of action at the location where you are (eg. alliance vs horde raid or vice versa) ADSL will be much better than the ISDN, as ISDN have a limited speed...

Make that:

3GB of International + Local Bandwidth
Account doesnt log in after cap.

Does your upload speed have any effect on WoW?

Wouldn't ISDN 128k be fast enough?

So the best suggestion is:
SAOL unshaped just for gaming (R399)
Any ISP shaped just for surfing + downloading (R250)
Plus Telkom 384k/128k (R450)
=R1100

This just shows what an expensive hobby online gaming can be !

yeah gaming is not cheap....

Upload speed does have a difference only when you need to upload huge amounts of packets, but mostly they are much smaller than the downloading packets
