I recently got telkom to drop my line to 3mbps from 4mbps due to instability. Since then, it was was very stable without much disconnections. The the SNR for Downstream always sat around 25.0db and Attenuation is 35.0db.

In the last week, my SNR decreased to about 15.0db and disconnects like every hour. VERY annoying!! And we don't even have bad weather can influence my connection (South Coast- KZN)

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Seems similar to my problem, except I'm living in Pretoria and my SNR was at 9 when I got my 4mbps and it's now at 15 after I asked them to sync it at 2mbps.

Maybe there is a loose connector somewhere down the line?

It's a problem I've had before, and am currently having again. One, or a couple, of the telephone poles that carry the actual ADSL line have loose or faulty connectors that cause noise on the line....that leads to a scratching sound on the telephone and an unstable ADSL line that keeps dropping randomly yet frequently.
The telltale sign of that problem is the scratching sound on the telephone.

If that is the case, just get a Telkom techie to come through with his little gadgets and gizmos and have him climb up the poles and fix connectors until there is no noise on the line.

Thanks for the help so far. Will call telkom and let a techie come in and have a look. Oh, I noticed we only have noise on the one Telephone in our house - The one closest to the ADSL router. The telephone in bedroom is absolutely fine.

True. Had the same problem recently and the static (scratching sound) on my telephone rendered the phone line pretty useless as it was almost impossible to hear someone when I phoned them.

Telkom techie came out this morning and it turned out the static was being caused by one of the cable joins inside my house. He fitted a new connector box thing and the static on the line disappeared. Hopefully this has sorted out my ADSL dropping connection problem as well.

Quick update: Got home last night and the static on my phone line was back  Back to square one it seems :(

Update. Still waiting for Telkom.

I also noticed, that the dial tone, on the line is very short and fast, eg "--- --- --- --- " And I don't have Voicemail activated.

Same trouble of disconnetions in Krugersdorp.
I went tru all my inhouse connections, all seems fine.
Telkom tested and said line is fine as far as the callcentre can see, haven't sent a techie out?
Trouble started about Last week.

I have the same problem in Benoni the last 5 weeks, every Saturday and Sunday my ADSL is on and off, off for about 4 hours, back an hour and off again few hours and back again. Phoning Telkom ADSL suport doesn't help.

Telkom should really look into this. I mean, screw 10mb lines!!! They have to get 4mb lines working first before considering an upgrade. My Opinion ;)

Interesting. Here too, well, sort of. When I make a call the line sometimes makes a "---" tone before the call connects.

Update:

Well the techie hasn't Pitched... He promised that he will be here on Tuesday. Phoned later and said the next day... NOTHING

Any how, my line have been able to hold 13 hours and going.
These are my line stats:

DOWN UP
SNR Margin
: 21.1 12.0 db
Line Attenuation
: 34.0 20.3 db
Data Rate
: 3072 511 kbps

My line started acting funny 30 minutes ago. Dropped twice and when I check the SNR down is moving between -3 to 22 db all the time. Wonder if someone is working at the exchange.

My line has been now suddenly more stable than ever, for the last 2 days.

PPP connection time :2:16:16:11

Techie didn't come though.

Will have to wait and see what this connection does. If it stays like this, I'm going to ask them to bump my connection up back to 4096k from 3072k to see what the connection does.

Well I had a similar problem where my line synced fine for years on 4096 and then started becoming unstable and dropping connections. Also had a static noise on the phone so was convinced it was a quality problem on telkom's lines - Guy on the line tells me its my phone or filter, i think ya watever but lo and behold it syncs fine when plugged straight into the wall.

Just a bit of info to help some people here with troubleshooting.
