I recently upgraded from a 384kbps to a 4mbps and have noticed instability at certain times of the day.

Unfortunately, I'm not at home atm so I don't have the noise ratios and all that handy, but I do know that for most of the day there is no problem. At about 20:00 at night, the connection starts to drop and then picks up again. This sometimes lasts for a few hours, which of course wreaks havoc on WoW.

We never had this problem with our previous line speed. We haven't changed any hardware, only the actual line speed has been upgraded. Any idea what could be causing this?

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 384 kbps
Line Attenuation 50 db 14 db
Noise Margin 8 db 12 db

Not to sure if this could be the cause but sometimes 4 meg ADSL does have problems if you are far away from the exchange. See if Telkom can change the line speed down to 2 meg or 1 meg over the phone ? I could be wrong so anybody who has had experience with this please comment

have the exact same problem, was running at 4meg for a year with no problems, then all of a sudden at night my line will drop and sync. Dropping the line speed did not help

Those are bad stats, you probably shouldnt be syncing at 4mb. :(

So what is normal or within reason for 4mbps? Would getting a new router help at all?

What really gets me though, is that there are large parts of the day when I will be downloading off the news server while someone else plays WoW with no problem at all. Then as if by magic, almost like bandwidth "load shedding", the connection drops and picks during the evening. Could our exchange be over-subscribed?

it worked great over the weekend, and right this minute its synching and loosing synch every few seconds .. its damn frustrating i cant work like this ... so is it an over-subscribed dslam???

I think there's an issue on the ADSL network, my connection is up and down a lot today.

I've had 4mb for well over a year and it's never done what it's doing today.

Connection Speed 4096 kbps 384 kbps
Line Attenuation 28 db 14.5 db
Noise Margin 17 db 12 db

I also upgraded to 4Mbit 2 weeks ago.

Was fine until the last couple of days - has been erratic to say the least.

First few days was bliss - 400KB/s from either of the 2 major news servers etc - in fact did about 14gigs first weekend.

Well now it's like #@%#$%#$. Dropping line sync for the past 72 hours quite often.

My Netgear 834gt is fine resyncing for the first several drops then sometimes itself it stalls and needs a soft reset.

What the peck is going on with the ADSL network ? Must be exchange related.

Fwiw - my line att. is 55db and SNR is 10.5 (downstream).

Please oh please bring back my stable connection arrraaagh:confused:

I wonder what is going on - I'm also experiencing dropped connections for the past 2 days (CPT)

There must be something wrong somewhere.

Proff

i dropped the line speed from 4meg to 2meg and now 1meg and still the same :( ... My snr margin is 24db so the line is def capable of more...

Im on the 2mb profile and my line drops at least 3 times a day and after 6 it drops like every 10 - 30 minutes.. with an snr of 12 it shouldnt be doing this, i went to telkom and they said i should fone (drum roll) 10217 and they would be able to "pull some tricks for me". i havent had time to sit on the fone holding for a half hour yet, but will have to try today..

has anyone with the problem resolved it? ... would really love to know what the problem really is ... getting sick and tired ... well now its up and synching but int is crawling ....

I also would like to know what the deal is with these unstable connection problems, as I am also a victim of it. :(

I also have a 4mb connection and as far as I can see, my Attenuation and SNR are quite healthy, but I still experience frequent drops in connection.

I decided to plug my router directly to the Telephone Wall Jack instead of through my Lightning protector then through to the jack. It helped a bit in the fact that I have fewer drops in connection, but I still have drops non-the-less

There must be a common issue which is causing all these problems for everyone, especially those with 1mb - 4mb ADSL lines. :(

in general

-test your ADSL without telephones/faxes (unplug filters)
-have a listen to your voice quality - pick up phone and press 0
-run routerstats (google) and plot some graphs (search myadsl for routerstats info)
-ask telkom techie to check/organise testing with sunrise sunset / dynatel 965 devices (advanced testers)

use routerstats - see if you can plot your snr values against time....share the result with us.

been down this route.
