Hello all

Since Tuesday my Internet speeds are very unstable.

For example earlier this evening Speedtest showed a latency of 25ms and speeds of what my line is, 2mbs

About 30min later the latency was 2503ms and download speed of 0.31mbs and upload of zero.

ISP and Telkom say all is fine their side and syncing at the correct speed, ports reset too.

The line is very slow most of the time but has few moments of full capacity.

Any ideas?

Are there other devices using your internet connection or malware on your computer?

We use our phones mainly to do all out Internet business. No devices.

Is there any interference with your routers' Wi-Fi signal?

ps. Try and switch off all but one phone and test your speed again.

Will try that. Not sure RE interference as I wouldn't actually know. It's been working perfect for the last year and a bit. I'm worried the router may be crossing the road. Lol.

To test Wi-Fi strength you could download one of the free Apps available on Google Store. It would give you an idea if your router is at fault or not.

It could also be that your exchange has a larger load than it used to have. :(

What I have done now is actually changed the WiFi password so the only device on the router is mine. Wife will join later. I have done some updates via Google store but so so slow

Oops, the LaraC troubleshooter is unable to identify the problem with your slow connectivity. :o

Hopefully another tech wiz will be along shortly. :)

It is not just about signal level, it is also about interference.

Download this app from the Google play store and use it to determine if there is interference present and then change the configuration of your Wi-Fi router to use a channel that is free of contention.
The Tool is available in the Google Play-store and it's called "Wifi Analyzer" by "farproc"

I appreciate your help tho, thank you

Also been experiencing bad latency here and speeds (ISP: Telkom). Looking at DNS's - they keep changing in latency and ownership keeps having issues OpenDNS and Google among others having issues with.

bradza, are you near your router? Have you checked SNR? My IT dept here at work suggested it but Im at work now and will only be @ home after 7pm to check

SNR down 20 and upstream 32. I'm pretty close to the exchange. The way I seem to get around issues is to actively keep scanning and changing DNS servers. Just flipped to another OpenDNS server and now having better speeds and connection... guess it will last a few minutes.

Here's an example for Googles DNS 8.8.8.8 on a good scan, the average for them and others seems around 70-80% which is odd.

8. 8. 8. 8 | Min | Avg | Max |Std.Dev|Reliab%|
----------------+-------+-------+-------+-------+-------+
- Cached Name | 0.032 | 0.035 | 0.043 | 0.003 | 94.4 |
- Uncached Name | 0.197 | 0.241 | 0.431 | 0.072 | 94.1 |
- DotCom Lookup | 0.206 | 0.223 | 0.297 | 0.028 | 87.5 |

Run DNS Benchmark a run on you PC and it will give you some idea what is happening with DNS, might solve your issue if it is a DNS issue. Might be something else but at least its another tool to use to help you. https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm

I will need to look when i get to a pc. We mainly use our phones but i do have a laptop

I generally check for the best DNS then change all my PC's/laptops/devices to the selected one for better connection. So if you check on the laptop then input the DNS into your phone, should be fine. As long as you know how to change the DNS, it can be tricky if you not sure. Would have to look at your manual/online to find that out :) Good luck!
I'm still having issues, goes up and down but there has definately something wrong with internet in SA since about 2-3 weeks ago.
