So the Cell C tech called be last night, as I had intermittent problems with my modem. It would have a descent connection with download speeds of around 2mbps, upload, 0.10 mbps and latency of around 80. The problem was that after playing Xbox Live for like 15min it would constantly disconnect and return to WCDMA. The tech said that it could possibly be that the modem is overheating and then it disconnects because it is hot. He said that I should monitor the heat till friday and he would phone me back. Funnily enough, after the call, the modems performances were significantly better. Download speeds of around 5mbps, upload of around 1mbps and 75 ping.!!!:) perhaps he activated something online. Haven't tried the XBL yet. He said if it is overheating, that is would be a firmware problem and that I could swop it out if that is the case

I think I also had some issues with heat on my modem. It was plugged into my laptop right next to the heat exhaust vent.

Moving the modem to a "cooler" USB port seems to have made a difference

It IS in the 'cooler' USB port.

I have taken my modem's back cover off to help it cool. But so far I have not found anything to suggest that overheating is causing instability.

Mine is definitely overheating. When I place on top of my pc case where I have a fan blowing it helps, but when I start downloading extensively like for instance skype video call it gets VERY hot and disconnects (almost like someone is pulling the stick out of the usb drive and plugging it back). I don't know what else I can do.....it is really annoying.

Does it do the same when plugged in directly into the pc (without cable)?

Yes, but it happens quicker when plugged directly into the pc, I am guessing it is because there is no fan blowing on it.

I have noticed when I use it in my work laptop that it is not getting that hot. Maybe because it is an air conditioned environment? Don't know... I will do four speedtests each from my laptop and home pc tonight to test whether this is true.
