HI everyone.
I'm having some problems with my Adobe Photoshop\ Lighroom Adobe Photography suite upgrades. It seems it has come to a point where it cannot update itself any further without some serious form of intervention. I have a Asus x555L laptop running windows 7, about 4 years old, but in the beginning I didn't always have the data to keep up with the windows updates and after one memorable update messed up my PS I stopped doing them.
So now a bit of googling tells me the most likely problem with my PS not wanting to update might be the fact that Windows isn't up to date. Now the question becomes, is it worth the effort to get my laptop to run the windows updater and hopefully get win 7 back up to date or spend money I don't really have and get the Pros to wipe the Laptop and install windows 10?

Any advise would be much appreciated thank you.

I would not connect a Windows 7 machine to the Internet. Support has long ended and even with the last released updates it is now considered a vulnerable operating system, unless you were to pay for extended support from Microsoft.

Why not try to upgrade to Windows 10? As far as I know you should still be able to do this for free.

Of course back up all important data beforehand.

Ask @abzo because he could be in the vicinity by tomorrow lunchtime to assist? Who knows?

If he is not available, please check the Win 10 upgrade path details here:

You could install windows 10 yourself if you comfortable with a bit of research.

Do you have an external hard drive?

If you have one large enough you could use a program like macrium to make a complete cloned image of your hard drive before doing the upgrade giving you the option to go back to windows 7 incase something goes wrong ( it's possible but unlikely)

As per the links above, it is possible to upgrade your win7 install from within windows itself

Wow, that's why I love this forum, always people ready to advise those of us with less knowledge. Ok, went and double checked, my laptop is running win 8.1, so not as bad as I thought.
I didn't know there was a way to get Win 10 for free. Now that is a bargain. When I bought my laptop about 4 - 5 years ago, Win 10 was still a bit buggy and especially PS had some trouble with it. I assume by now that's been sorted.

Ahh, ok.

If you are happy with Windows 8.1 then try updating it first. While mainstream support has ended for that OS, extended support only ends on January 2023 so you'll still get security updates till then. Not everyone likes Windows 10 and you might end up battling with other unforeseen issues depending on your laptop and software, but up to you if you want to give it a try or if after updating 8.1 your problems with your Adobe products persist.

Photoshop works fine with windows 10 :)

W10 is substantially better than W8.

Upgrade to W10 if you can, it will keep getting support for a long time.

That's good advice!

Also, you can boot Win 10 from USB:

Do the update. While the LD was in progress was the ideal time to do it.

BUT, backup all your data first, ensure that you have the original software available for anything else you are using such as the Adobe suite etc. Seriously go through all the sw you are using and dump the stuff you are no longer using.

Make sure that you have a good reliable Internet connection available before starting the update process.
Follow the instructions and have lots of patience, don't rush anything.

And ignore all the BS about WIN 10, most of it is just from people with hangups or those that just like to hate MS.

If you still feel intimidated, get an expert in to do it for you.

The latest Adobe applications don't have support for Win 7 anymore - so just upgrade to Windows 10. Welcome to the second decade of 2020.

If your're still on Win7, that tells me that you know nothing about security or IT in general, you run ancient hardware, or you're an anti Win10 Karen who is scared to get their kids vaccinated, so stick to Win7 to keep 5G signals out.

There's no reasons to be running Win7 that is 11 years old already, if modern computing is anything to go by...

Not all of it's BS, the office internet still dies every monday morning when all the PC's dial home.

Dial what?
How are you managing the PCs on the office network?
Not managing them as a business setup?
Inadequate Internet capacity?
Come on, this is pretty irrelevant comment in a thread about one person in a home environment with one PC.

Com do, this is pretty irrelevant comment in a thread about one person in a home environment with one PC.
No management, just a bunch of office PC's connected to a 2MB (now being upgraded to 4MB) line left to fight it out for capacity. The boss is not inclined to spend money for management hardware..... I'm still convincing him to replace the server that runs win7 fine but can't upgrade to win10 because of cpu requirements..

EDIT: that said though the same counts for any kind of network setup, home or office. The difference between 2MB and 4MB is massive because of how bandwidth hungry win10 is.

Windows 10.

Lately Ive been testing their security and Ive found it pretty freeken strong. (windows defender used to be useless, now its stronk)

Meh! I used to live very easily with a 2 Mbps ADSL line and 4 PCs all on WIN 10! All it requires is a tiny bit of Windows update management. If all the PCs are left to try and update themselves, of course, the connection is going to suffer. That is hardly WIN 10s problem is it?

I agree that managers of small businesses have to start to THINK about what they are doing though and again, this debate is much better located in a separate thread that deals with multiple PCs connected to a low bandwidth Internet connection.

One of the update settings in Win10 lets machines get updates peer-to-peer.

The upgrade from Win7 or 8 to 10 is dead easy. Download the Media Creation Tool, run it, and select Upgrade Now. I've done plenty, no hassles.
