[Cape Town | ITWeb, 18 January 2006] - Microsoft is halfway through an evaluation process to introduce its Xbox 360 gaming console to the local market and a number of distributors are aiming for the rights.

...White declined to disclose the potential distributors, but ITWeb has learnt that some of the companies vying for the contract include a joint venture between hardware distributorships Axis and Reviva, motion picture company Nu Metro (whose main rival, Ster-Kinekor, distributes the Sony PlayStation), hardware manufacturer Mustek, and a music distributorship.

Microsoft Train Simulator R449 for the PC
Halo for the PC R399 when PC games cost R299.

Why waite till they bring in the Xbox 360

Guys I am coming home to SA and I can bring in 2 or 3 consols other than my own. Let me know if you are intrested. I will be back early March.

depends....probably at the most R5k depends....I have my name down at a few places and if I get it at retail £3500. Might open a bid :)....but I am not going to sell it at mad prices.

lol sorry I ment if I get it at retail here....I will sell it at R3500.....pizza droped on my lap :)

oh well, at least since the PS3 looks to be out in the EU in March 2007 (!) then the Xbox 360 will have plenty of time to solidify its position in SA...

Even with the XBOX, I had to do handstands to get one.... its not a case that the PS3/XBOX360 is better than each other, its all about marketing....

the PS3 is actively marketed by Ster-Kinekor here in SA. They have agreements with *ALL* the Chain-stores (Game,CNA,DION,Makro etc etc)
Microsoft doesnt have an agreement with anyone.. a few Mom and Pop shops around SA ? Its about who has the better marketing and distributor chain agreements.

I prefer the XBOX to PS2, but the PS2 is king in SA ... Sony/SterKinekor has SA retailers wrapped around their little fingers.

My ideas are based on the current XBOX situation in SA (not the XBOX360)

When I was in Hong Kong in Dec, I had a few friends who wanted to get the XBOX 360...some of them looked up info and it seems like it is zoned so not a good idea yet to get one in SA since u have to buy games from the region it came from. Costs about R2500 in HK if I remember correctly.

yes, there will be only a few free-region games for the X360, all others will be zone-locked.

the price tag of R2500 makes me wanna cry though... :(

A few things that you all have to remember with the PS3 are that when Microsoft launched the Xbox the PS2 had already been out for a few years....this gave PS a good footing in the market and MS in there marketing wisdom said ...."Hey we are cool with No. 2 spot". But now when everybody is starting the race from the same level MS is going to be a very serious contender. Also Xbox has a major financial machine behind it....namely Microsoft......if they decide to take on Ster-Kinekor they will not stand a chance. Also they could only sell it online in an attempt to cut out all the store issues and boost the online awareness in SA in preparation for the Xbox live platform. But lets not be fooled the PS3 is going to be an awesome piece of kit.

XBOX360 and PS3 comes down to two things for me
1) Game prices
2) Availability - PS2 games are available EVERYWHERE - XBOX games - nowhere.
nuff said.

I am currently living in the UK and here we have choice of both.

I disagree strongly with that point. In SA there are quite a few places where you can get legit games, and i am talking the latest release and platinum series too.

I own an Xbox and never had issues with games since Animeworx always has ample stock games for EVERY console out there.

Just remember there is no official representation of Xbox (1) in ZA. If MS negotiates distributaship with someone like Nu Metro, that'll give them the exact same exposure as PS2 has through Ster kinekor.

In terms of Marketing cloat in ZA, I'd also say that Microsoft has a much bigger corporate footprint that Sony. This is going to be a very interesting round of the fight.

I'll just sit here flailing a revolution controller rooting for the underdog ;)

Oh, on price, Microsoft ZA typically takes dollar price and slaps a '0' on the end to get the rand price, so expect the 360's to come in at R3000 and R4000.

360's @ R3000 is still ok... i am presuming a Animeworx price tag of around R4000 though...

Guys Like I said we have some issues getting hold of the consols here in the UK from retailers. check out comet and dixons ect. so I have to use ebay so my price can not be gaurenteed. I tend to only go for consols that are between £300 - £450. I am going back to SA to start a new line of work so if I bring ...I bring if I dont ....I dont.

m1t0 - rather focus on a specific store and phone them twice a day. I just helped organise one in London, it took us less than a week, just by being persistant.
