Update: Xbox 360 in SA

I don't feel that comfortable if Numetro get the rights to distribute the Xbox 360.

It will probably end up in a cartel with Ster-Kinekor.

Yeah as attractive as it sounds, I would really only buy one if there is a local distrbutorship. It's really just a mission for me when something isn't fully supported, and with South African retailers any excuse you give them not to honour and warranty, they will use.

If a manufacturer cannot be ar$ed to create a distribution for their product here in SA, I won't be ar$ed to support them. I stand behind my previous statement that XBOX games are nigh impossible to get when compared to PS2 - sure I can buy online or from one or two dealers - but I can buy PS2 games EVERYWHERE.

i dont get your point Moederloos... what difference is there is you can buy EVERYWHERE while maybe two or three dealers are enough? can you buy FERRARI's everywhere in SA or just 2 or 3 dealers by the way?

People have different styles when it comes to buying. You seem to not mind searching for a particular item, ordering it and waiting - if that suits your style, then fine.
I, OTOH, buy on the spur of the moment - I walk into a Computer shop, see a game I might like, and buy it. I may never have heard of it before, and would not have found it online. If I had to order it, I would lose interest long before I got to the website. Ditto for having to go to a store solely to buy a particular game.
At PnP for groceries? Check out the games - buy one. That is my style.

Each to his own, I suppose.

i suppose, i rather have speciality stores so you can actually talk to the people involved in the selling of such items, who you going to find in PnP to ask about the requirements of a game for your PC or their opinion? the till lady? i dont think so.

rather have the proper people talking what they know about what they sell, and not some Incredible Corruption look-alike gawking you with the FX5200 specs coz its the greatest card on earth! :p

Actually Moerderloos your position doesn't work: The playstation is distributed by Ster kinekor and not Sony. How would that be different to Nu Metro distributing for MS.

If they did the games would be available EVERYWHERE, exactly the same as the playstation.

The killer for the 360 is Live! Microsoft can/will set up central servers and probably a dedicated low latency link to Europe. Sonies online service depends on the publisher, which is much more difficult to pull off in ZA, meaning all teh game importers will have to set up their own servers and international links.

I think you misread me (or I mis-spoke). My beef is with MS for not having a distrubution channel setup, like Sony does. I do not care who distributes, provided that some one does - and that they do it as well as Sony / ster-kinekor.
Thinking about it though, MS PC games are well distributed - wonder why they cannot do the same for XBOX?

I suspect because of the additional rental and hardware support issues. They're probably considering whomever it is, there are 4 names in the pot.

Has any one thought how much Microsoft must do to sell the 360 in SA??? It is a large investment that they have to make compared to the possible return that they might get. The 360 will not come to SA as it is costly for the average worker. The obstacles they have to concur just for the live component is huge....close to imposable at this stage.

MS looses around $170 per console sold in the US and EU. Thats similar to their loses for the original Xbox but that is now selling in SA for R1900 with 2 free games.

Within two months from now MS will have a foothold within SA with the X360, they can easily afford it if they speak to the right people.

This is very true the business model that they have adopted was to loose money on the consol but then to make it up on the games. What is the general salary of a game consol player in SA???? R5000 - R10000 / month...MS budgets that the average gamer will buy up to 2 games per quarter. I don't see Saffas taking out R1000 every month for a game that is really optimised for online gaming in any case...

....so lets say this guy goes and puts in a 512 line at home ......he will have to buy gold membership at about R50 per month as silver is just not worth it..... plus the 360 transmits about 14 - 20kbps with voice....so lets say 14....that's about 800kb per minute transferred and about 50Megs per hour. Lets say you play about 30 Hours per month out of an average of 720 hours available per month. You will then be dedicating 1.5 Gig of traffic per month just to your 360. So see where I am going with this......you are moving into a pretty niche market here.....not something worth the time and effort for a large company like MS.....also as far as I know the Xbox consoles sold in SA are imports and not supported by MS.

got an email from Animeworx that they will have the X360 by end of the month. suggested retail price for the Premium model is R4400 with around 6-8 titles at sale date.

from the current crop of games i am more keen into Project Gotham Racing, Oblivion and the upcoming Burnout X360 remake.
