Hey guys!

Hope everyone is doing well

About 4, nearly 5 years ago I built my first rig with thanks to so many of you kind folk who gave me rock solid advice. The build went smoothly and had many years of enjoyable gaming!

The time has come now for an upgrade (well i think so). Picked up an Msi Gtx 1070 ti gaming edition gpu in November, plugged it in and it kept restarting my pc. After literally a month or so of trying to figure out what it was, it turned out to be the power supply. Weird as hell as my old R9390 ran fine in without restarting the pc and it draws significantly more power than my new card. Anyway, replaced my 600w psu with an Antec 750w 80 plus gold with a view to upgrading anyway.

So, I need some advice... xD

I currently have:

i5 4690
As Rock Pro 4 Z97 mobo
16gb DDR3 1866 ram
Gtx 1070ti Gpu
750w psu
2x ssd
1x mechanical

Today i bought a new Phantecs case on special with a view to using it for the new pc

The main concern like always is what CPU to get. I regret not getting an unlocked cpu as that would have helped me out now as I am getting some "bottlenecking" in BF1 and PubG, even at low settings my cpu is hitting 100% and Gpu sitting at 70%. Weirdly enough i can run all games on ultra, but with the cpu hitting 80-100% usage and it heats up considerably to over 80 degrees. Games like pubG go from 130fps down to 60 and below all of a sudden which annoys me so much. (Yes, i am vol k@k, im one of those guys who wants my pc to run well)

Do i go for i5 8600k or i7 8700k, I have always wanted an i7 but they are always that much more pricey. I dont stream, although its fun to record games here and there. I have looked at Ryzen, although their single core performance is not as good, which translates badly for games.

My mindset is why have a 1070ti when it cant run at its full potential, I bought the card when it was on a seriously good special, as i got it for 8k in november, its now 11k. I understand this is now the most pricey component to buy not only from an availability point of view but price aswell

I am in the process of selling a few things to buy these components xD.

Finally i might add that i buy my stuff from either Wootware, Evetech or Takealot and i am based in Cpt

Thanks in advance guys! and sorry for the big story but thought i would add some background!

Just buy a i7-4790 from PotterH on carbs?
He was selling some again very recently for a little over 2K.
I can't find the thread now but if you do want to upgrade.

Neither.

Get yourself a used i7-4790k for cheap on carbonite & save yourself a good chunk of cash.

Thanks for the advice guys! Will look on Carbonite, abit scared to buy a second hand cpu for it to possibly fail or be broken etc but i definitely see the value in doing so

I might also add, that this is LGA 1150, I.e haswell refresh so its not so common to find these still. If anyone has links or people they know selling the cpu individually please let me know! Thanks so much

This is why i got the 4670K when i upgrade years ago, i've clocked it to 4.4Ghz and i'm still going strong with a 1070. air cooled with a evo 212 i max out at about 71 degrees.

Yeah man, was my first build. This is the beautiful thing about pc's tho, you live and you learn!

That doesn't sound right, time to replace the thermal paste perhaps?

If you have the cash, spoil yourself to a nice I7 8700k setup. :p
Also, PUBG is a bad game to "judge: your computers' performance. :D On my I7 7700k with 1080ti and 16GB ram, my frames are all over the place as well.
My experience, PUBG doesn't like HT cores, so you can also look at a I5 8600K. 16GB ram and a SSD is a must though.

The chances of a CPU failing is near zero, it is one of the safest components to buy used.

You can PM PotterH on carbonite as he sells new oem cpus without coolers, he also runs this online store,

You'll occasionally see 4790k's going for ~R2200 or so on carb but they get snapped up very quickly so you gotto be fast.

Awesome vid, thanks so much guys awesome advice. I might add i have replaced thermal paste too! Ah im in two minds right now about what to do. What are the general views on i5 8600k vs i7 8700 non k? My mind is going crazy with all the different options xD gotta love computers.

My concern, even after watching the vid, is that the performance jump from i5 4690 which is 3.5 base clock and 3.7 boost, is that the performance boost is not going to be that dramatic with the i7 4790. One part of my mind is saying just spend the cash and get the best i can afford, and the other part is disagreeing

You won't see enough of an upgrade to make it worth it (my opinion). CPU market has kind of plateaued for gamers, over the last couple of years. The trend has now been moving to properly use more cores, so rather saving up and buying 2/3rd gen Ryzen or the next gen Intel (which will be 6 core mainstream according to their presentations). Wouldn't recommend buying an 8700K now, you can get the 4790K if you want (4790 is not worth the effort at all) but you won't see that much of a difference.

What resolution do you game at?

At the end of the day do what makes you happy...
