Upgrade from 1110 to HD PVR help

Hi, I upgraded my single view to PVR today.

I have single LNB + Cable and so I effectively have exactly the same as before with a new decoder.

What do I need to get:
1) HD channels working
2) PVR recording
3) Record 1, watch 1 channel

I assume there are additional monthly costs?
Do I have to run another cable and upgrade the LNB? What is SATcr and can I use that instead of running 2 cables?

Assuming you're on Premium you should already have be able to view the HD channels. To activate the PVR functions you'll need to give the call centre a call - that'll cost an additional R65pm and allow you to pause, rewind, record etc. To avoid channel conflicts you'll need to replace your LNB with a dual LNB. You can use SATcr, but for some reason none of the "guys who know" seem to recommend it.

Thanks Speedster, so does SATcr use the same cable (RG6U)? For some reason I don't see the HD channels tho :( another call to multichoice I guess. I could see them on the old decoder but nothing showed, on the new one they aren't there - its the HD PVR 2 P or something...
 
Yup, SatCR will use the same cable, you just replace the LNB. Call the call centre and make sure they activate HD access & PVR access, the PVR access is an extra R65, HD access doesn't cost extra but last I checked it was still something that needed to be activated separately
Make sure you change the LNB mode in the settings:
Advanced > Network Options > LNB Mode

Awesome, thanks! It makes no sense to me that installers and MC would favour dual LNBs over one that requires a single cable... There must be a reason... Off to Google I go

Higher cost and upgradability... If you get XtraView, you need to pull a second cable anyway.
 
Nice, thanks! What's the 2x6 multi switch for? Distributing the signal? I'm pretty much sorted for where I want it in the house (though I wish I could send it wirelessly to my gym instead of having to dig up the garden to send the extra cable :) )
So cost on the LNB then... OK, I'll take that into consideration.

Where is the best place to buy these things? I guess installers will want to do the job themselves rather than sell me a new LNB (understandable), or will someone be happy to sell me one? We have an Ellies warehouse here but I suspect they are distributors and don't retail. I'll try one or two of the installers by phone first I think.
 
Yup, basically a 2x6 multiswitch has the 2 inputs from the dual LNB and then you can have upto 6 going out. The HDPVR 2P requires 2, so you have 4 spare. If you got another HDPVR 2P you would then only need a 2x4 multiswitch

As for the best place it all depends on where you live... Try HDcabling.co.za for online purchases

Ta! So if I split it right near the dish that's OK? I'm thinking... under the eaves where it's sheltered, or just other side in the ceiling... that way I don't have to run the third cable all the way from the decoder to the flat (dish is 7m closer). Q is... if I opt for Xtraview, do I need to run it from the decoder, or will the switch suffice?

if you opt for xtraview you still have to run a cable from Primary deocder to the secondary decoder, so you still have to run a cable from the house to the flat.

Not sure I understand why I guess... considering the two ports at the back of the HDPVR 2 P decoder are used and both connect to the 2x4 switch?

Doesn't the install go: 2x ports on LNB -> 2x4 switch -> port 1 + port 2 on HD PVR decoder? Which side of the switch do you use to run to your xtraview decoder?

Or is the second port on the HD PVR decoder only to connect to the second decoder for xtraview (left hand #1 in image)? Perhpas I'm misunderstanding something...

2 diferent things
You need need LNB cables in to the LNB ports of the decoders so if for example you want xtravire with 2 HD pvr decoders set up will be like so:
2 cables out of LNB into 2x4 multi switch. 4 cables out of multi switch - 2 cables from goes in to PVR 1 and another 2 cables into PVR 2 - this is how your decoders get the satelite feed, then 1 cable from the rf out (or rf in) of PVR goes to Rf in (or rf out) of PVR 2 - this is the heart beat cable and is prety much the way the decoders comunicate allowing the subscription to be shared ie Xtraview


for your set up only one HD pvr and 1110 only diference is instead of 4 cables from multi switch to decoders it will be 3 2 to pVR and one to 1100 and Heart beat between the 2
