Hi. Having the following PC:
I5-3340 3.1ghz
10GB Ram
GTX 1050 oc ti
1080p 24" monitor (60hz)
It is rather old as can be seen from the specs. My son mostly plays Fortnite and Call of duty. What needs to be upgraded first? And then from there? Or must I just get a whole new pc altogether? If he stays with just 1080p 60hz graphics, will the 1050 be ok?
Sorry for all the questions, but gaming components are expensive and don't want to make a mistake.
Thanks
Jacques

For 60Hz the CPU is mostly still OK for 60Hz games I think, so the GPU first. Even the 1060 isn't a 1080p60hz GPU any more if you play on Very High settings. I would really try to get a 3060 or 6600.

BUT, GPU prices are insane right now, and if you don't have money to burn, rather don't upgrade the GPU for the next year or so.

I don't think I've ever upgraded the CPU and GPU at the same time, except for that one time during the AGP -> PCIe shift.
How much do you want to spend? AMD doesn't have anything on the low end, and the new generation intel CPUs should be released early in the new year. If you want to upgrade something right now, go for a CPU upgrade. The i5 11400 or 10400 depending on the budget.

While an SSD won't make a difference in frame rate, it's still a worthwhile upgrade if he doesn't have one.

You can start with mb/cpu/ram, the 1050 gonna be the weak part but gpus are stupid expensive now. Maybe put away something monthly towards a gpu and maybe next year sometime prices drop a bit... an ssd would also be cool.

Thanks.
Will upgrade the mb, cpu and ram first. And then later the gpu and monitor.
Do have a SSD already.

Although you are not mentioning it, upgrade the PSU (750W or more), CPU (any Intel Core i5, i7 from 9th gen upwards), RAM (DDR4 3200 MHz or faster), MB, (should support your latest gen CPU and RAM and have a PCI-E 4 slot). That will at least "future proof" the base components for your next upgrades of the GPU, Hard drive (SSD, HDD, etc.).

Don't do this:

Why 750 or more? If he's only aiming for a 1080p machine, the CPU will top out at most 90w, GPU probably 180w. He could get away with a decent 550w, even a decent 500w would do if he doesn't have a lot of HDDs

I never argue with stupid people, so you are right
Wow really, firstly you give bad advice and then you insult, perhaps you can go back to your cave and troll someone else.
He doesn't need a 750w for a build that will do most games at 1080p at 60fps.

750w power supply :ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

100% not required. Face it you are wrong, have been called out for giving not the best advice, and are now upset like a child
