Hire an experienced developer to properly assess the migration procedure, also to correspond between your extensions and template’s compatibility. As per my advice, start over with Joomla 3 with a compatible template and extension library, and recycle your content where necessary. Either way, your SEO will be temporarily hit. We are also close to 3.7 where more things will change.

This is put as layman as possible.

Am willing to hire an expert but your "start over" may not be a bad idea. The site is not very big :D
Thanks

Agree with the start over. The effort it takes to upgrade isn't worth it. Either the website is just content so it is quick enough to install v3 and reinsert the content or the website makes use of many modules/components that no longer exist for newer versions and therefore has to be redone anyway.

Joomla is useful if you want to easily manage your site. You also have 2 options of either being happy with the old version and never changing or realistically looking into doing an overhaul every 2-3 years.
