Upgrade Woes - What To Get?

For a higher-class DX10 card, a trusted brandname 400-500W PSU should do nicely. With Y2K's 10K budget, I'd agree with the C2D CPU + mobo, 2Gb DDR2-800, and probably an 8800GTS 320Mb, along with a new PSU. That will run current games very well. Then sell the GTS in 12 months, once the new DX10 hardware and software's been tested.

Whilst cheaper PSU's often do run well enough, it's wiser to ensure that new, higher-specced hardware is run off a reliable and guaranteed PSU.

I've seen that happen before - wasn't pretty and the dude not insured. Ouch.

Like I said if u already have a up to date rig with 8800gtx that costs 5k sure go for it.But if your one of the few ppl who doesn't have 5k to spend on a video card.And u have something like a 7300gt or something like that rather go for a bigger video card 1st then go out and buy a bigger better quality psu.What is the use of a 850w R2000 psu if your not running sli or a geforce 8800gtx or have 10 drives in your pc???

Future-proofing It saves you money in the long-term if you ever plan on upgrading again.

Yep... if you go for a PSU, you go big... A 500w PSU can't support SLi - especially not two 8800GTX cards... I believe they require something like 850w at least, if I'm not mistaken? I call it a long-term investment... As well as a security measure

SLI/CrossFire was a good Idea but hardly any games support it and when they do go got to get a 20" LCD just to get into thier naitive resolutions also past 30+ fps *constant* I can't realy see a difference in games.

Your PSU will blow beofore your Mobo, unless you OC' it to the max!! kinda like a safety mesure, with a GPU windows will just report that you're display adaptor does not have enough power and will not function correctly!

These days a 500/600watt PSU will power just about everything unless you going to go MAX! like 8800Ultra SLI, 6 1TB HHD's, QX6800, 680SLi, 4GB's of DDR3 1800 ROFL then a 300Watt will probably refuse to get into your case and a 900watt+ psu is required!

Why the rush? Wait for the 8900's to be on the market and for ATI's 2nd gen DX10.1 cards as well.

I would reccommend you wait till Crysis & UT3 are out before dishing out +R15K on 1st gen DX10 hardware. At least you will have benchmarks on the net to work your expenses on.

And play what games? UT3 seems like the sole PS3 hottie "month-exclusive". A tad pricey though for one game.

ja, Thats what I am doing Crysis comes out and could run realy crap on Nvidia and realy good on ATi or Visa/Versa but if you wait too long youll be waiting for the next best thing all the time! I have just decided that buy June 08' will get my PC is nothing new is out then so be it! BTW last PC i will get till I am out of University

Also, do the right thing and put your new, expensive equipment behind a good surge protector, or even better, throw in an APC UPS.

I Just get those surge protect plugs and attach that to a multi-plug and plug my PC into the multi-plug so when I have a huge surge it blows the plug and not mt PSU.
