Upgraded, then downgraded?

A couple weeks back I was upgradedto 10mb/s but my line became completely unstable (noise levels were at 2db), so I called Telkom and after much hassle they finally synced me at 8mb/s (12db noise level) and all was perfect. Speeds were great. Then today I checked the stats on my modem to discover that I am syncing at 4mb/s again. Phoned Telkom and they told me my line was only capable of syncing at 6mb/s. However when they raised it to 6mb/s, the noise levels dropped to 6db and adsl was non-existant. They can't give me a reason as to how this all happened either :/

Anyone having similar issues?

In Rondebosch, Cape Town.

Same here!! I was syncing at 10Mbits with no issues, week later they dropped me down to 4meg for no reason at all. And they said they can only upgrade me to 8meg :( Well, its better than 6meg..wtf though

They probably weren't expecting the demand that they got. I will need to check my speeds when I get back home tonight since I am also connected to the Clareinch exchange.
 
I've been on 7Mbps (Clareinch) since Sun 29th, so its not an exchange problem AFAIK.

The OP says it was noise related, so its more likely a copper line problem (or junections). It would help if you post your line attenuation and estimated distance from the exchange.

Edit: Here are my figures, 2.5km from exchange, plus 5 days of CRC errors.

Well I'm still on the same speed. Had about 5.5 since I got it.
 
Ok finally got an update from a very helpful guy at Telkom! Apparently they have done away with the 8mb/s profile on the Rondebosch exchange - it's either 6mb or 10mb now, at 6mb/s my line is stable at least so happiness finally!

Why have they done away with 8meg profile?!Is this through calling 0800 375 375?

No idea why they did away with it, nor did the guy at Telkom's call centre unfortunately... I was running just fine at 8mb/s before they dropped me down to 4mb's again. Yes 0800 375 375 is the number i dealt with.
 
Clareinch seems to be very unstable at the moment, especially during the day time. Comes right at night, but during the day I am actually getting high latency (like 100-200ms to Cape Town on speedtest) and every day it seems to be getting slowly worse...today I am actually getting a bit of instability too.

My ping also seems bad, and my unshaped 1GB account doesnt get great speeds!

whats going on? Also on Clareinche
