Upgraded to 256 from 128 the other day. Happy so far - things are much more usable, especially if we're browsing while downloading. I know it isn't really 256, but it's twice as fast as what wasn't really 128.

I'm really glad you're happy with the upgrade. But to think you're paying for 256 service so that you can get 128 speed is really sad.

Thats quite a lot to pay for a 160kbps package. Looks like DSL192 is cheaper and faster without the lock-in contract.

I see Sentech has changed the names of the packages. The MyWireless 256 is now MyWireless professional. Serves them right! :)

The only thing I like about sentech is the "no cap". I've used over 5GB in a day before and 85GB of bandwidth in a month. The ADSL options from Telkom are just to restrictive.

NoWire does offer a monthly contract. R799 is the price for the "256" professional package.

85 gig in one month on 256k is impossible.... especially 256k sentech style

Its not impossible. I've done it, sentech style
52GB upload, 35GB download

Totals: 87GB
(recorded with NetMeter)

I would be interested to know how you achieved this, as the max upload speed that Sentech advertises is 128k, and that translates to 1.38-odd gig in a day, just under 43 gig a month on a 31-day month. This is a theoretical max, assuming upload running 100% for 100% of the month. Also, I take it this was before Sentech's soft-cap of 20gig for the 256 package was introduced.

I assume also your 5gig was in both directions (upload and download), rather than just download, as the max download one can get in a single day is 2.76Gig.

When did you achieve this, out of interest? I am on the exact same package, just a vastly different location, and there is now way that I can get close to this with the current throttling of speed after the initial period.

Local downloads run at between 25 - 40K/sec and uploading runs over 30K/sec as well

Yup. Speed is nice - but UL and DL, on 128 we've been doing 3GB per week. The no-cap is is of priority for us.

JayT, that makes interesting reading, as it doesn't seem to tie in with two things (1) Your tcpiq measurements that have been done since Jan where the throughput indicates a lower sustained rate, and (2) Sentech's claim's of a 128k upload max on their products, which should give you a max of 16KB/s.

How have the figures changed since January? You also seem to be running at non-Sentech specified speeds unlike us poor mortals. Aha, but I noticed the key (I think) - you are talking about local downloads and uploads only, or mainly? That would explain the discrepancy then? You running a DC hub or something for the local crowd?

Then another question, Sentech has come down on users that exceeded their soft cap figures (128 - 10Gig, 256 - 20Gig), have you been ... approached by Sentech as of yet?

passif, tcpiq only gives semi accurate results when there is no traffic at all. You download a 2mb file while the test is running and the results go as low as 10kbps.

Perhaps the upload throttle has been implemented now? I havent been downloading or uploading as much. Jan was 38GB and last month was 9.2GB. Im using my connection for work so theres less time to download.

Decembers figures were around 50/50. Jan was 90% local. Im only using emule (restricted bandwidth) and bit torrent apps. Im not running any server as such.

I've never received any form of email from sentech. But then again, I never actually signed the contract either.

Darn, bloody work that gets in the way of a good download. ;)

Thanks for that - I also used eMule and bittorrent, actually stopped as I was getting exceedingly poor results. Then again, I am also on a problematic tower. If you have the time and the inclination, try and re-enact a major download for a day or two. I would be interested to see whether you get similar results - yeah, just a personal interest on this one.

Oh, can I bum some bandwidth off you, you seem to have lots to spare? ;)
