Upgraded to iPhone 3Gs Yesterday

Hey,

ok, so I upgraded to the iPhone 3Gs 32gig yesterday with Vodacom. If I look under settings> general> about - the Version is 3.1.2 (7D11).

I have browsed through some of the other iPhone posts, but I never went into great detail because it seemed that it related to older versions of the iPhone.

Does anyone know if it is safe for me to try and 'jailbreak' my iPhone, and If I test it out, would I be able to undo the jailbreak if neccesary?

Another thing, with regards to 3G, do I need to set up any 3G related settings? Because my iPhone shows a 3G icon every now and then and apps run quickly when it shows, but other times it shows a blue dot icon and apps run very slowly or can't connect to the net.

any advice or articles anyone can suggest would be great, thx.

Yes it's safe to Jailbreak, you can simply restore it if anything goes wrong.

rather try get a boot neutered ipsw file and use that. Its got cydia installed and u wont break ur internet tethering, youtube works etc

Due to the fact that your 3GS is new stock (firmware 3.1.2 out of the box), the chances of you being able to jailbreak un-tethered are slim to none.

You can try and use blackra1n RC3 to jailbreak it, however if the iTunes recovery logo appears when you reboot the phone, then is called a "tethered" jailbreak. You have two options:

- to re-run blackra1n RC3
- to restore the phone and lose the jailbreak

The downside to this is that each time you reboot the phone, you will have to run blackra1n RC3 again and you may not be at a PC when you need it.

I have added this to the front page of my tips/tricks thread so we don't keep getting the same question coming up.

That's probably not going to be very convenient if i have to run it from a pc every time I switch my phone on and off.
Do you know how i would restore the phone back to normal if i try it out? Do I use iTunes to do it?

Yeah just hit the restore button in the iPhone tab once it's connected to the PC.

Make a backup first of your phone (right click iPhone in iTunes, backup). Then after the firnware restore you can restore from this backup to get back all your data.

It just depends on your 3G reception in the area. If it can connect to 3G it will, if not it will connect to the next best option (Edge or GPRS)
