Upgrading and switching to MTN

I’m currently on a Vodacom contract which expires in a month or two. My question is, can I “buy” a new contract now with MTN and keep my current number and leave the Vodacom contract and let it run out? Or do I have to wait till the Vodacom one expires?

the last time I asked about this I was told the contract needs to be paid in full before SP would release the number.

so you'll either have to wait or buy it out.
