Hi guys. I have an EB license since 1994, and would like to go for a class C license (truck or bus up to 16 000kg).
How difficult is it to get such a license? I assume I need to do a new learners for this class. Do I need to take driving lessons again for this class or can I just go for the test? How difficult is it to pass the class C driving test?

Class C is for buses and goods vehicles with GVM greater than 16 000 kg. A trailer with GVM of 750 kg or less may be attached.

I assume drivers licenses aren't like an internet connection you can upgrade and downgrade at will. You probably go through the full process regardless of whether you possess other classes of license.

This. If you want to add a section, you need with doing the learners for that section, then do the test and pass. Same as if you had a motorcycle license at 16, and wanted a car license at 18.

Doesn't matter how good you are, go for lessons - the **** they test for is usually BS - and not good practice for actually driving on the road... and you have to do your learners again - although that's easy.

I expected to have to do the whole mission from scratch, but I was hoping it would count in my favour that I've already got a regular license.

You'll need to redo everything from the learner's test. Having done somehting similar about 3 years, I also highly recommend going for lessons, as driving a bus/truck is not exactly like driving a car. For example, the curb is absolutely off limits, but to avoid it, you are allowed to cross painted lines on the road, even solid ones, which you aren't allowed to do in a car.
I'd also recommend going for an EC license, as you get all the benefits of a C license, but with heavier trailers.

I can recommend "He and She" driving school in Parow. They have trucks that you can practise with, very good instructors (at least mine was) and you can then do the test in the vehicle you practised in, which is very useful.

Existing license means nothing in this case. As someone mentioned earlier, it's exactly like your motorcycle license not counting towards your normal car license.
