Upgrading DStv decoder questions

Hi all.

I have an existing DSTV Explora. Do I need to replace the LNB or cables to connect the new DSTV Ultra, or can I use the existing ones?

It depends.

If you have a smart LNB (which uses a single cable from the dish/LNB to the decoder then you're safe.)

Not sure if the old Explora used twin LNB (which requires 2 cables to the decoder) then you either need to change to the smart LNB or get a multiswitch.

I did have the dish replaced not too long ago, perhaps a year ago, due to hail damage. There appears to be a single cable coming into the house, then a single cable connected to the back of the decoder. I'll take a look outside tomorrow to confirm. Thank you!

It depends.

No, even the first Explora only uses a Unicable from the Smart LNB or similar. One had to get a "multiswitch" to use it with a regular LNB (I've got one).

So all good for this upgrade.

That LNB is properly cooked.. I would replace that soon

Existing LNB looks like a "single LNB" which would be ancient and now useless. You should be able to find a twin LNB still, should do enough.
If the decoder LNB input is two sockets, you'll need either a quad LNB or a multiswitch (multiswitches don't handle Hi Band though, read on...)

Essential things to check:
1. Do newer model OpenView decoders maybe allow for Unicable LNB's instead? (Possibly insisted on as well, though I doubt that.)
2. If a twin LNB is planned for - does OpenView use Hi Band at all now? If so, do the decoders being used require a 10600 or the older 10700 Hi local oscillator model option?
3. Doesn't look like the skew angle has been set for the LNB - this is fairly simple to do, but requires careful instruction and effort. However if the dish isn't pointed accurately it will add to your headaches.

Bottom line - probably better to get an installer in.
