Anyone know how long this would take?? Can this just be done by phoning telkom and hoping to get through to a consultant??

Or is there something else that needs to be done?

Just give them a call.

Mine to a few hours.

Just reset your router every few hours.

It will depend on whether you are linked to a MSAN or a DSLAM/IMAX.

MSAN - quick

Other - not so quick

MSAN and ISAM - quick

everything else - ya, you can wait for the call center woman to click the authorise upgrade button.

I would offer to assist you, But at the moment i don't have authorisation to perform the speed upgrades on new system.

Are your sure your line stats are good enough for 40Mb/s?

You have to be VERY close to an exchange in order to reach anything close to that.

Pretty sure:

Line Attentuation upstream :0 dbm
Line Attentuation downstream 12.6db
Noise Margin up: 37.1db
Noise margin downstream : 26.8 db

That looks pretty decent.

I would go ahead and see what you get.

Are you already using a VDSL modem?

I am already on vdsl 20mbps. Using the pace.

Not had any luck getting through to a consultant yet thought...

Upgrade done now.

Seems stable.

Line stats:

Line attenuation downstream 12.4 db
Noise margin up 36.1db
Noise margin downstream 19.3 db

Hey, also recently upgraded to 40mbs. However, speed test showing closer to 20mbs. Have you experienced something similar?

No speedtest showing pretty close to 40mbps, 38. something.

Did you upgrade your isp account to 40mbps if you are using uncapped??

Thanks for the replies guys, so here's the story.

First got my 4mbs installed by Telkom via Afrihost and was informed that I can get up to 40mbs because the exchange is 600m away.
Then told Afrihost I want to upgrade to 40mbs and waited a few days until everything was sorted.

But now the line speed is more indicative of 20mbs - I'm at work at the moment so cant get modem's sync stats. But I do remember that Downstream attenuation is a little high (27 dB) in my opinion for having the exchange only 600m away? Funny thing is I remember testing line attenuation when I first got the line installed and got 12dB or so.

And there's another problem - Afrihost's line test shows my line is syncing at 10mbs even though I'm on the 40mbs capped package (so I assume throttling not an issue here).

Only thing I can think of is, either line needs fixing because attenuation is higher than it should be or Afrihost hasn't upgraded me to 40mbs properly? Oh and I'm using the Telkom Pace modem so not sure if there's an issue there?

I have similar issue. I am 600m from the MSAN that I am connected to. However my attenuation is alot higher than what it should be.

There is definitely a issue with the line in both our cases but the bigger problem is to have Telkom attend to the line fault.

I have been in process of upgrading my line from 10mb to 20mb ADSL2+ and subsequently a change in modulation to VDSL for last 3 weeks. This involved going to Telkom outlet, visiting technicians that did cut over to MSAN and the regular 10 phone calls to Telkom, Facebook, TelkomZA and self service chat.

Everyone apart from technician (who went out of his way to assist in this upgrade) told me that I'm on DSLAM and max line speed i can get in my area is 10mb, but alas I'm sitting here with 20mb VDSL (my line stats are quite poor in relation to what it should be, given my distance from the MSAN.

See stats below

I would now like to upgrade to 40mb, but given my line stats above I dont think they will approve upgrade. Now the challenge will be to get them to come out and troubleshoot the line.

I really can't stand dealing with this company anymore.
