Hi Guys,

I would just like some advice on how to upgrade an "iMac Early 2009" from Mac OSX Lion to Yosemite.

Do I have to do it in steps (Upgrade in order of the Mac OSX release date "Lion - Mountain Lion- Mavericks- Yosemite")

Or

Can I simply upgrade from Lion straight to Yosemite?

What are your thoughts on running Yosemite on a iMac early 2009 performance wise?

Cheers!

Most of OSX upgrades have been cosmetic, the same with iOS. Apple makes it sound like you need the latest version to do certain things, but it's balony. Unless you are a programmer, you can run everything else on Lion. The performance won't lag on Yosemite either, but some older apps may stop working. Just make a backup in Recovery mode so you can revert if you don't like it. Luckily it's free so you don't have anything to lose.

No, you 'buy' it for free on the app store, and then just run the install file. But remember to backup first, or keep a lion disk on hand so that you can revert.

Once you download the Yosemite installer, copy it somewhere because it will get deleted after the upgrade which means another 4GB download if you need to use it again.

Make sure all the firmware updates are installed and you are on 10.7.5 before installing 10.10
