Pretty much as expected, I've run into Adobe CS programs like Illustrator and Photoshop lagging on my Toshiba i5 laptop with only 4GB RAM.

Rather than sink over R10 000 into a standalone PC, I reckon I can get away with a sub-R2 000 investment into one extra stick of 4GB RAM and a 256GB SSD to replace the internal HD.

What do you guys think? Would that do the trick? Obviously it's not a permanent solution, but I just want to breath some life into my laptop without breaking the bank right now.

It'll make a huge difference!

2016 and you are still running an old skool hdd in a laptop? O_O

For around R1k you'll easily find a 256gb ssd and takelot has 4gb laptop memory for R350 odd.

That should work a treat, but consider upgrading to 16GB RAM if supported and it's still within your budget.

Yeah, only problem with that is I'd then have to chuck the one stick of 4GB RAM I have and replace it with two more expensive sticks of 8GB RAM, but I'll see ... maybe there's a special on 8GB 1600 RAM on soon :)
