I really want to speed up my PC and upgrade my 3800+ AMD CPU. The prices for the 5600+ and the 6000+ haven't changed for some time but what's coming next in the AM2 camp? Are the AM2 CPU's a dieing breed and the AM2+ going to rule the AMD camp?

The AM2's are effectively dead. The last of their breed was the 6400+ Black Edition. The AM2+ are the next gen but you need to upgrade your board to unlock it's full potential

Id say you should go for a Phenom . Upgrading your MB is a must if it doesn't support the AM2+. Also Thestealth whats ur 3D Mark 06 score?

Well I was hoping on the last price drop before it's effectively dead. I don't want to miss out on getting a 5600+ or a 6000+ (the reasonably prices ones with 1MB L2) at the best possible price.

Thanks for the heads up.

well im sure the amd 6400+ black edition is an upgrade from your current cpu

in saying this though, maybe get a new board because it would suck to buy this pc and then a year from now it breaks and you have to replace mobo anyhow :)

3D Mark 06: I really don't know...I haven't benched the specs in my sig :o

mmm, I would go for a 5600 Black edition or 6400 black edition (overclockable on any motherboard). My friend has his 6400+ running at 3.6Ghz. Beats my Q6600 at 2.4Ghz in 3dmark byt 500 points (we both got 8800GTS 640mb's). Plus his board only cost 800 bucks

When it comes to replacing your board, I would switch to Intel. The Phenoms still need to pick up speed. then there are the Tri-cores coming from AMD later this year.

Your buddy should take his 6400+ to 3.7Ghz. I managed to get mine there stable on my current board

my current board works great but I get you about going intel. I think about it now and then, especially with 6MB of L2 cache.

The 6400+ would be a massive upgrade so I will see. I was planning on a mini upgrade i.e. R1000 upgrade. I can't really flog my current CPU for anything.
