I am getting a new Graphics Card and Processor and need some help.

I have the Nvidia 8600GT 512MB graphics card and I want to upgrade to an MSI 240GT 1GB 128-bit graphics card, is it worth upgrading or will it stay the same in game performance? I'll use it for some gaming.

Then I have a Pentium D 3.00GHz :wtf: processor and I want to upgrade to a Core2duo 3.00Ghz.

I have a 400Watt power supply, will it support the graphics card and processor or must I upgrade to a 500Watt?

I'll appreciate it if someone can help me. :) Thanx

That is a pretty nice performance bump. Are you getting the parts new or 2nd hand?

Do you know if it is a branded power supply or generic?

I'd say that you should stick with the 8600GT or go for at least the HD 6850 / GTX 460 to make it worth while.

Also, rather upgrade to Core2Quad. You should be able to get Core2Quads 2nd-hand for like R1000 or less. Preferably go for the Q8400/Q9400 or better.

A 400W PSU should suffice if it is a decent one, which I highly doubt it is. You'll have to post the exact model if you want further assistance w.r.t. the PSU.

Check your motherboard specs as many of those older boards don't support all Core 2 processors. What MB do you have?

Im gonna upgrade to a G41 Motherboard. I think it will take a core2duo. I have a SiS Motherboard. I dont know where to look for the model number.

@sharkbait - My budget for a Graphics Card and Processor will be just R2500, im a student so im not that rich.

Just make sure you get the DDR5 version. Then it will be worth it. The 512mb DDR5 is faster than the 1Gig DDR3.

@Qwikslver - I'm buying the DDR5 one, all the reviews on youtube say its better than DDR3.

I just wanna say that I have a ZIXA 400Watt Power Supply I bought at Matrix Warehouse, so I dont know if it will be strong enough for all the components?

Nice budget. Do you have to buy new or do you want to buy new? If you want to buy new, I would suggest going for AMD:

Good luck finding information on that Packard Bell supplied Gigabyte motherboard.

From what I found it seems like a Socket 775 motherboard with an AGP slot.
I highly doubt that it will support the Core 2 Duo processors though.

Update:
I'd say that you should rather save the money till you have enough for an entry level Core i5 2400 rig.
It will definitely be worth the wait, unless you really can't bare working on your current rig.

But you didn't get the 8600GT in agp... :D

@SharkBait - The 8600GT is PCI Express x16 or whatever they call it. Its not an AGP card.

Im paying R600 for the new G41 Motherboard
It's not really worth it to buy those old stuff brand new and paying that much for it when you can get the latest Sandy Bridge motherboards brand new from R980.

You can perhaps just upgrade the graphics card and PSU and then when you have enough money again, upgrade the RAM, CPU & motherboard to Sandy Bridge / Socket 2011 :)

You can get a GTX 460 1GB card at around R1800 and a decent 500W PSU at around R600.
The recommended PSU's in that kind of price bracket are:
Corsair CX500 (weakest)
Silverstone Strider Essential 500W
Corsair VX450 (best)
